I have a 17 yr daughter with an IQ of 67. For yrs the school and her doctor labeled her LD. Finally I got state testing and they say cause of her low IQ and test scores she is MR. I find it hard to connect in our area with Parents and have a bond with others as I find that the school is no help. YEs she is special ed but they treat her like any other of the other students with help.
We are looking for the future and i find little out there. We are looking for a group home and our area has none. She will get SSI when she turns 18 so that might help.. I need support. Posted on 10/21/07, 10:10 am |

welcome to the board. we will give you all the support possible here and these people are awesome and know what you are going through. i have a mentally challanged daughter also that is 35 and needs total care. i take care of her at home but it is hard. i dont know what state you live in, my daughter received her ssi when she was 14 along with a medical card for her use only. now that my husband retired last year, they put her on social security under my husbands account. may i ask if she is able to take care of herself? i found the schools not to be very helpful either when she attended. hope you can find some answers here and i am sure others will be along shortly that know more than i do, love gram

In our state some of the agencies like the ARC provide service coordinators. They help seek what ever service you are in need of. Your daughter is at an age where you will want to look into possible sheltered work settings too. Do you have an ARC you can contact? Can the school counselor give you the name of agencies in your area that provide services? Can your daughter stay in school after she turns 18? Now is the right time to be asking lots of questions and finding out what is out there. If I can help in anyway , please let me know. Hugs and more hugs, Donna

donna thanks our area offers no sheltered workshops. They work with a group that trains folks to recycle and do odd jobs. My daughter is high functioning to the level she can and has held a job at a resturant this summer ..greeting and bussing. we are looking at a college in New mexico tht has programs. OUr area is considered rural and offers very little in the way of services..
thanks..

If you are able to get her into a college, they will provide her with all kinds of support and help her get started after college. I hope it works out for you. Hugs and more hugs, Donna
