Hi..I am new to this forum and hope that you all can give some input. My oldest sister, age 57, is mentally retarded with cerebral palsy and for years was taken care of by my mom. My mom died 4 years ago and my next oldest sister (age 53) took over as her legal guardian. All has been fine until recently. My DD sister has taken a huge plunge. She was fairly independent previously and worked at a grocery store and went to a sheltered workshop during the other weekdays. Now, since her seizure activity started right before Christmas, she is unable to speak, is incontinent and is on several medications for seizures, anti=anxiety, psychosis, etc.

She has become a HUGE amount of work now for my other sister, her caregiver. Anyway....we all love her and will do whatever we can to help, BUT...we can't seem to find anyone who can figure out what needs to be done to figure out whether my DD can come back from this. They keep telling us to "wait" until the meds kick in. Well, it's been 3 weeks...!!!! Anyway...we have so many needs and it's not clear where to turn to get all the answers. I wish we could get in-home care for my DD but we can't afford that privately.

does anyone have any input on who to talk to? She lives in Massachusetts.

thank you for any input.

" Does your sister have a case manager/caseworker as well? They can help. Seizures are difficult to deal with and effect everyday living in so many areas. The meds. will take awhile to take effect. Hang in there! "

" Hi,

If you live in MA and are on MA Health plans ask her physician about PCA (Personal Care Attendant) services. She sounds like she would be eligilbe for this. If you have private insurance you can apply for a buy-in program where you pay a small monthly premium and it would open up a whole world of services like the PCA and even diaper type products.

Hope this helps,
Bontom "
