I just joined this community and am hoping that there are some of you out there who can give me some direction. My daughter is almost 10 and is struggling with weight partly because she has hypotonia (low motor skills) so getting her active is a challenge. We are working on getting her into swimming, which she loves and also get her back into horseback riding for children w/ disabilities.
The main challenge I'm facing now is that she wants to ride a bike, but she still needs training wheels, but due to her weight they're not stable enough. Plus, she doesn't have the muscle strength or the coordination to ride a 2 wheel bike. I'm trying to find if there are adaptive bikes in there area where I live (houston area ) that aren't too terribly expensive. I'm currently in between jobs & our main income comes from my late husband's social security death benefits. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Posted on 10/26/07, 11:10 pm |

hi and yes there are bicycles for kids like ours but we got ours through a therapists reconmendation. my daughter, tori, used one at school and they suggested it. possibly you could get a donation of one if you were to contact some organizations like charities-my tori got stuff from the cerebral palsy, epilepsy and commission for the blind. it might take work but the kids really enjoy it.......

I agree with Tori. I think you should start with a PT. They get special catalogs and will know exactly what is right for your daughter. In NYS there are grants available to help pay for items like this. Your PT should know if they are available in Texas. Good luck!! Hugs and more hugs, Donna

Hello,
You can get an adaptive tricycle at http://worksmancycles.com/shopesit... My son has an adaptive tricycle and he loves to ride it. We did not get it from this website but these are similar to the one we have. Other activities I use to try to keep my son active are swinging, walking, swimming, bouncy house, and I recently found out that he loves to swing a plastic bat at wiffel balls. Good Luck, I see that this is an old post.

Also, Sometimes you can get money to help pay for an item like this from local Knights of Columbus, Lions Clubs and other organizations that may have grants to help.
