Tell me about this ring thing please

People have suggested that I check on a ring thing that the doctor can insert for vaginal dryness. Any info on it would be greatly appreciated. Has it worked for you? Are there any side effects or risks that you know of?

Thanks.

" 1) Estring or Femring are the 2 common ring forms of Vaginal administration of estradiol ONLY
2) Drug delivery from intravaginal ring dosage forms is rapid
3) Different vaginal ring devices are not interchangeable due to differences in dosage and and how effective they are for symptom control
4) For example, Estring dosages are not effective for addressing vasomotor symptoms (the hot flashes) but rather is used more for vaginal dryness (atrophic vaginitis)

" That would be perfect. I am getting used to handling the hot flashes. Are there any cancer risks with these though like there are with taking Prempro? "

" Hey Dawn
Depends on which ring you use...Femring has more systemic (bloodstream) absorption of estradiol than does estring...so yes it could carry the same risks that oral estrogen replacement would carry

" Hi Dr. O,

I took your suggestion from a different thread and bought some Replens and used it last night. So far, so good. I'm already feeling more comfortable so I'm crossing my fingers that it will last the 3 days at a time that it's supposed to. My husband and I are hoping that this along with KY will help me enjoy sex again. I want to wait a day or two before trying. "

" Hi Dawn,

I used the ring for a short while and it has benefits over the creams ( which can be messy!) and the persary tablet (which if you are too dry to begin with does not activate the tablet so to speak). It was good the only problem i found was that it sometimes can fall out and it is not the easiest to fit back in yourself. It can be quite discomforting for a while but soon you forget it is there! I never experienced any side effects from using the ring. "

" ems, Thanks for the update. So far, so good on replens but if that starts to not be good enough, the estring would be my next step. "
