Vaginal dryness

I get many questions in my practice about treatment for vaginal dryness in those not taking systemic hormone replacement.

1) For mild vaginal dryness associated with menopause a long acting vaginal moisturizer such as Replens seems to be as effective as the vaginal estrogen creams for relief of dryness
2) If we do use vaginal estrogens for moderate dryness the estradiol tablets or ring (estring or vagifem) cause less systemic absorption of estrogen than the estrogen creams.
3) For mild or moderate dryness a water soluble lubricant at the time of intercourse is helpful. The water soluble lubricants are astroglide or K-Y lubricant...those are better than the gelatin-based products like K-Y Jelly.

" water soluble lubes get sticky and you have to reapply frequently...the best lube on the market is Pjur..it is made in Germany...you can Google it and buy it online (try cheaplubes.com)...I live in San Francisco...so I just walk into to discount lube shop and pick up a bottle. You don't have to use as much...and it is latex safe..so you can use it with condoms too. "

" I was asked again by a DS member for some nonhormonal vaginal moisturizing or lubricating preparations that have been studied for vaginal dryness
1) Replens (polycarbophil) as mentioned above has great results when studied
2) Astroglide (glucano delta lactone) as we have all heard about...

any others our members have had success with?

" I ran and got some Replens on my lunch break. I can't wait to get home tonight to try it. Does anyone know if it starts to work right away? Maybe using this every three days and using KY during intercourse, I won't be uncomfortable to have sex. "

" It's making it better but still a little dry. It's a lot more bearable now. I'm still going to keep using it and I'll keep using it unless it starts getting worse.

Give it a try and let us know if it helped you. "

" Redsilver, I don't remember what I paid for it but at the Walgreens that I went to you had two choices. It either came in prefilled insert tubes or came with one insert that you fill yourself. That was the cheaper one and that's what I got. It's really easy to fill it yourself so I'd recommend that. "

" Another thing is you only use it every three days so one tube lasts a while.

I'm also taking my doctor's advice and having sex more often (once or twice a week) using KY Jelly and that actually seems to be helping too. "
