I am new to the group and a few questions that only I trust you ladies to answer honestly for me. I posted a discussion earlier and got some answers now I am on another quest. I have done some research but still need honest answers from people that have been there. I believe I am in peri menopause or starting the real thing.
1. How much Black Cohash are you suppose to take a day to stop all the hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings? (mainly depression and anxiety I am on effexor 150)

2.How long does it take to kick in?

3. Any other natural remedies that might help?

I purchased some black cohosh root and it says take one 3x a day they are 300mg each.

I also bought Natures Bounty Menopause formula. It advertises that it will help with all of the symptoms.
Any comments or advice would be greatly appriciated. Or if you see me on pm me.
Thank you in advance.

" Be careful with over the counter products. They are not FDA approved and you have to be careful of the dose you take. I am reading now an excellent book that may help with some of your questions. It is called" Could this be ...perimenopause "It is written by Dr. Steven Goldstein. There is a lot of useful information out there. Look on the internet and also your library. Good luck !!!! "

" I was taking wellbutrin but took myself off of it(I told my dr I was doing so) because I always felt like I was in a daze. I started taking 5htp(told my dr I was doing so and he tried to tell me that studies showed it really doesn't do anything to help). My sleep is much better, anxiety and depression is better. I still have some episodes of anxiety & depression so I did some research and about 3 weeks ago started taking Maca and I think I am finally noticing a little bit of difference. I know you have to be very careful with the supplements but you also have to watch the prescription drugs and their side effects. My suggestion is to talk to your dr or your pharmacist. A lot of times the pharamcist will know better if the supplements will interfere with your scripts. "

" I just read a book by a dr. I'm sorry I can't recall his name or the title and it is 1-12 hrs away at camap, but I will get this too you as soon as the camper gets home. Anyway, he mentioned Black Cohash as well. He also mentioned vitamin E. Which is good for many things. They don't know how it works on hot flashes but there is scientific research that it does. Just another idea to throw at ya. "

" the only clinical study on black cohosh was done on remifemin, so the dose would be whatever the remifemin box says. however black cohosh has been linked to liver damage and it is advised not to use it for more than 6 months without having bloodwork to test liver function. One woman had damage right away, long before the 6 months.

as for other natural remedies beware of anything that claims it will cure all your menopause symptoms, there are a lot of scams out there that prey on women who are desperate to feel better.

omega 3s from fish oil have helped some people with depression. "
