I have been taking hormone replacement since I was 43 due to thyroid disease. I am now 58 and still take them. They are bio-identical Estrace and Prometrium. The question I have is why is there such a big issue about taking hormones since the body has been making them all our life and when we go into menopause they deplete. I feel we should be able to replace them without the the fear that is being put out there. I know some people get breast cancer which is terrible, but some people lose their quality of life without them. Also if you have noticed the commericals on television for the drugs people take, look at the side effects, it should scare anyone into not taking them but they take them anyway.
From what I heard estrogen isn't always the cause of cancer, so I believe those people should be able to continue taking them. We don't hear very much about the leading cause of death in women, heart attacks.... Any opinions? Posted on 04/03/08, 01:04 am |

well the thing is that when we are young we are meant to have these hormones, that is why our bodies produce them and that is why young women who have surgical menopause and take hormones young are at a lower risk.
when we get older, we are not meant to have these hormones, and though there are effects of adjusting to life without them there are serious risks accociated with taking them and the longer you take them the higher the risk. heart attack, stroke and blood clots ARE aslo an increased risk with HRT and even with birth control pills. yes sometimes it does come down to a quality of life factor. If a woman feels so bad without hormones that she is unable to function or enjoy a quality of life of course she needs HRT. Most women in that case would prefer to enjoy the years they have left, rather than have a better chance of living many many more uncomfortable years. yes it is true that all medications have benefits, side effects and risks.

I just wanted to chime in. I went through menopause at age 31 and now at age 35 have breast cancer. Was on HRT for 3 years. No cancer in my family. Makes you think. I have taken myself off of the HRT and am trying to manage my symptoms natually, but it is hard to go through this again at age 35. I am going for a 3rd operation to try and get clear margins in my breast and then start radiation. It has been a whirlwind. I would certainly think twice about starting HRT again. But at my age (31) it didn't seem like I had a choice.

I am so sorry to hear about your breast cancer, was it estrogen dominent? I guess you have all types of different cases, the women in my family took estrogen until they passed in their 80's and never had cancer....I so don't really understand cancer, except we did have in naturally when we were young, so what is wrong with relplacing it when we are older with bio-identical hormones....? But again I am not a doctor but I guess I am willing to take that chance... What about heart disease we hear nothing about that, it is the leading killer of women????
Again so sorry to hear about your cancer... Take care, Kathy Orangevale, California

Have they suggested anything natural for your hormone balance? Soy, black cohosh or anything like that? I know they sure help me, aong with Evening Primrose Oil and fish oils for the Omega 3's.
