I contracted spinal meningitis when I was about 4 days old before I left the hosptial i was born at. At 7 days old my mother rushed me to the hospital with a 105 temp. I was a military hospital and they made her wait almost 4 hours in the waiting room. By the time they saw me they said it could have easily been minutes close to death. They didnt know what was wrong with me until they did two spinal taps. I was read my last rights twice by the priest and baptized because they knew I was going to die. My head was huge and filled with liquid and i look like an alien. They figured out that it was meningitis more importantly spinal meningitis. It took close to many years before it was put behind me. I was always under opservation for hearing problems and what not and always had tubes in my head and ears and constant ear infections. At that time meningitis cases in infants were not handled well the military hospital i was at had to call the CDC to find out how to handle it. Now onto the present. I never thought much about the fact that this had happened to me when i was born but now it seems alot of things that are wrong with me seem to be tying to this....please help i need to talk to someone or just ne information..thank you i feel so in the dark about whats wrong with me...

" I am sorry to hear that this happend to you. Many things you have to deal with day to day are due to the meningitis. It has scared parts of your brain tissue...however the brain is a wonderful thing it can reginerate cells to help comp. for the ones that were damaged.
I can tell you this from watching my daugther who has overcome issues because of the same thing.
At 10 days old I rushed her to the ER because of none stop seizures but was told she was fine. She did not seem to get better so I took her to another hospital where she was admitted to the PICU for bactrial meningitis. 45 days later we got to take her home. She will most likely have her 3 VP Shunts for life, mild CP, seizures, and vision problems....but I am blessed to have her in my life every day. I hope this helps...PS she is now 3 1/2 years old :) "

" I am very sorry to hear that another individual is having lasting effects from meningitis. My son had it at 3 1/2. He was diagnosed with sinus infection and on oral meds for 12 days. he crashed on the 12 day after his last dose of antibiotics and was rushed to the ER. We took him home 4 days later with a PICC line and I gave him the final 6 days of IV antibiotics at home. Every year I asked about his changes and asked about the correlation to the meningitis as was told no. He was diagnosed with microcephaly at age 7 and this became the blame for all. This past summer I was given a specialist in Texas and took a leap to find answers. Finally, I got them. Hunter suffered from severe frontal lobe damage bilaterally. Even though he had 10 specialists here no one connected the post-meningitis syndrome to his problems. Since his treatment he is off 8 meds!!! he was being treated for severe ADHD, bipolar tendencies, and occasional headaches. All which were related to his brain injury. He is now more like the happy go lucky person he was before he got meningitis at age 3 1/2. We may have to get more treatments later, but every day I thank GOD for guiding us to someone who actually helped. The brain can rebuild, it just takes alot of time. Hunter will probably never be on the same mental level as other kids his age, but I have come to grips with the fact that doctors don't know all the answers and sometimes you have to keep searching for them on your own. Good luck and I pray that you are doing better. "
