Determination of Assets/Income

I have an unemployed relative who has just gone in the hospital with serious, possibly life threatening, problems (organ failure). She's been living with her retired mom and not working regularly for some time. She also has a teenage son. My mother doesn't have much money either, but she gets a small retirement. The hospital says we might be able to sign my relative up for Medicaid but I'm concerned about whether they'll try to count her mom's retirement income as part of her assets (and potentially go after that money, or any other assets her mom has). Does anyone know how these determinations are made?

Thanks,
Pokeybear

" I would submit an application as soon as possible to the Medicaid office. They will not "go after" any monies the mother has. All medical bills will be your relative's name and will become her debt.

Your relative will most likely have to provide proof of her illness by having her doctor fill out a form to submit to the office. "

" no they will not. It is not her income. You are allowed to have certain assets and still qualify. If she is going to apply and they ask her how she is paying her bills this is the only reason that her mother will have to become involved. Then all she has to do is sign a written statement stating that she is living with her mother and has no income. And her mother will not have to state how she is providing for the family since she is not applying herself. Only way her income is questioned is if she applies as well. "
