I am having great internal conflict. two months ago I was busted with weed. Since then I have quit smoking.

Because of legal issues I have had to be in drug counseling. 12 steps ect. I don't believe I was an addict. Admittedly there have been times in the past where I smoked way more than I should have, but recently I only smoked when all my work was done. I had a great job I was excellent at, Straight A student, great relationships, great kids. I have anxiety and depression and was using weed to calm down. I also enjoyed smoking and being out in nature. It opened up the world for me and helped me think about things in a different light. I am working on alternate stress management techniques. They have been really successful.

12 step people would call this "denial". I can't get past step 1. I don't believe my life had become unmanageable. It has only become unmanageable since the law has imposed all this punishment and treatment. I have had no trouble quitting. I feel untrue to myself to say I am an addict. I know these programs are really successful for some people. I feel like this conflict is adding to my depression. I just wish that now that I quit, I could get on with my life.

How do I handle this?

" Well, I am a 12 step person, and it sounds to me like you found yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time...I am not saying that you are not an addict and I am not saying that you are. Addiction is mostly a self-diagnosed disease. In my opinion, as long as you do not ONLY use weed to cope, I think you should be fine...If there is not a lot of preoccupation with the drug then it probably is not a problem...I don't really have any advice on the punishment and treatment other than stick it out it can't go on forever right??? Send me a message or something... "
