Caring for someone with AMD

Hi,
I have just joined this support group. I currently care for my elderly Mum (85yrs old)who has AMD-wet in the right eye and dry in the left. She has struggled so much with the way this disease has changed her life but is mighty strong, considering. I notice that her vision seems to deteriorate when she is unwell or tired. Does anyone else find the same?
Her vision is really quite bad and reading is virtually impossible, even with bright lights and large fonts.
Regards
Reklaw

" Hi there. My Mum started having problems about 10 years ago and her vision slowly deteriorated from then. When my Dad passed away 3 years ago there was a sudden deterioration and since then we have learnt that stress can make things worse. Her biggest problem was that she didn't know anything about it and wasn't with a specialist who cared either. Best to get your retina scanned and monitored regularly and find a specialist who can advise you well. Also take the supplements that strengthen the macular. In Australia we have Blackmores Macuvision and Lutein tablets. Antioxidents are good too. All slow down the deterioration. Using the Amstler grid daily is imperative to detect any changes immediately and then get in touch with your specialist who may be able to use injections to arrest the deterioration. Anyway, hopefully as there is more awareness nowadays, you won't have the terrible problems my Mum has. Hope this helps, Regards Reklaw "
