Does Lactose Intolerance go away?

I found out that I was Lactose Intolerant right after High School so around 2004. I took that test where you drink that horrible yellow drink (they tell you it tastes like gaterade but it definitely doesnt) and they said I had a severe case of it. I used to be able to eat anything I wanted in High School.. I could eat a huge ice cream sundae with no problem.. Now if I did that Id be in a lot of trouble. Ive gotten every test out there.. and they said I have IBS and acid reflux. Does anyone else have a combination of that? I wonder if L/I comes with any of those? I was taking Lactaid pills before each meal but that wasnt really working. My doctor just said to stay away from dairy all together but its really hard to do that. I try but I get tempted to easily. Anyways the point of this is to find out if it will ever go away? Ive heard that a lot of people get rid of it after they have kids. I mean Im not going to go do that lol just to get rid of it but Im just curious if thats true.

" There are loads of alternatives to dairy like soy products. If you change your diet, I'm betting the IBS and other issues will improve. I follow the Eat To Live Diet by Dr. Fuhrman and it's great. Good luck! I know how tempting it can be, like when my husband orders a bubbling hot piece of pizza! "

" Wow. Yes, I just went through hell with these diagnoses of Acid Reflux and IBS trying to find the source of my abdominal pain cause it came out of no where and was horrible. Initially, I heard I was constipated from stress, sent to a therapist, i was like this is a really a joke here cause I ain't doing this to myself. Then I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux, but I take nothing for that and don't know what's up with that. So this saga of trips to a head shrinker and test. Finally, it was decided after 12 months IBS. Then came a test called Lactotype by GI doctor and it was declared Primary Lactose Defiency. And whoa! This Lactose stuff is no joke! And no, IBS does not stand with GI doc after finding Lactose Intolerance. The Lactose intolerance causes diarhea but it swings back and can cause intestinal obstruction, my friend has it and told me that yesterday. She said it will cause constipation and diarhea!! "

" Mine went away for a short time before or around puberty, but came back later with a vengance. I've been stuck with it since. I don't think it goes away. Yes, I have been diagnosed with IBS and Acid Reflux as well. I use OTC's for the Acid Reflux, which also seems to aggravate my Asthma.

TGG "

" I'm sorry you can't have soy either. Try this when you want ice cream: freeze a couple of bananas for 24 hours. Grind them up in a blender or food processor. I eat them with Alaska non-dairy chocolate sauce. Yum! Also, there are a lot of products made from rice milk. Good luck! "

" I came across this site www.lactoseintolerant.org/ and it talked about various treatments. Very interesting blog as well. I found some very interesting information that helped me out that I did not realize about lactose intolerance. The one product that interested me the most was the Lactagen program. It’s a 38-day one-time program for lactose intolerance. Anyone out there who has gone through the program or recommends it? "

" I didn't used to be lactose intolerant. I just figured it out last fall. I was recently diagnosed with GERD, and I really believe all that acid ate away enzymes in my intestines that caused my intolerance. "

" I understand how hard it is to give up dairy, but once you do, you'll never want to go back. For me, it was extra hard because I was a vegetarian (like, no meat, chicken or fish) for over 3 years. Once I gave up dairy I had to compromise and start to eat fish again, and occasionally chicken. Not only was I giving up pizza and ice cream, but I was also particially giving up on one of my strongest beliefs. It was hard, but I realized that my life is so much better this way, because I can actaully feel healthy again. "

" I discovered that I was Latose Intolerant several years ago. I dediced to discover the foods I could use about 2 years ago.

I use to think that being allergic to dairy was not being allergic to dairy. That dairy includes a whole host of products. I now use the following: soy products, sheep products, goat products, rice products, tofu products, and almond produts.

My stomach becomes upset when I use even a small amount of cows products.

I discovered soy cheese, did not try it yet, soy yougert, it's ok
I found that there is a varity of goat's milk cheese, sheep milk cheese. I use tofutti ice cream, tofutti cream cheese, it is ok, and tofutti sour cream, it's ok.
I found veggie blend products, there ok.

It's been a long hard fight to discover what I can eat and not eat. "
