How did they find your stone?

My urologist was puzzled when x-rays didn't find my stone, yet ultrasound did.

Now with x-rays 1 week later, there is nothing there! He says that I might have passed the stone and not noticed. It's a 6mm stone. Doc is setting up another ultrasound to check.

" Hi Waterrat
Non contrast CT scan is the imaging of choice for kidney stones because it is the modality able to pick up ALL kinds of stones
Not all stones are visible on xray and your urologist should know that...here is the info:

1) Kidney Stones are classified into five categories based on their composition: calcium oxalate (70 percent), calcium phosphate (5 to 10 percent), uric acid (10 percent), struvite (15 to 20 percent) and cystine (1 percent).
2) Kidney stones can be classified more broadly into calcareous (calcium-containing) stones and noncalcareous stones.
3) Calcium containing stones usually are visible on xray WHEREAS Noncalcareous stones (uric acid, cystine, and struvite stones) often are radiolucent or POORLY VISUALIZED on XRAY.
