Hey everyone, I am new to the IBS group but not to DS. I just recently was diagnosed with IBS and the doctor perscribed Bentyl. I hate taking meds and try to take as few as possible, but the pain is awful! I read up on Bentyl, and quite honestly the side effects list scared me a little... however I am still trying to keep an open mind. Most meds have a scary side effect list after all. I know almost everyone will react differantly but I was wondering over all how many of you had a positive experence and how many of you had a negative experience on Bentyl. Thanks!

I have tried it but it doesn't seem to help me out.

I take it everyday! I would be lost without it! I was the same way with the side effects until I ended up in the er and wish I would of started taking it sooner! Just try 1 pill and see what happens. The best way to take it is 30 mins before you eat. It works after you eat to but better before.

My family doc put me on Bentyl and said it was a mild old drug that was safe. When my IBS got worse I went to a gastroenterologist and he tripled the amount - morning, noon and bedtime. That's when I started getting better. I've gone down to 2 a day and I'll probably take it the rest of my life, and my doc is fine that.

Thanks for all of you comments. I think I may give it a try. I was so happy when I called the pharmacy to find out the cost and they said the generic is only $6! Finally a medicaition I can afford!

I haven't read the other replies, but I am on that as well. I try to only take if i have too! The best way to get use to you is take it once a day for a week, before bed because it made me sleepy. So what that does is it gets your brain use to it, that way you can take it anytime throughout the day and not get sleepy. I like to take it before i eat something I know will upset me or if I am just having a BAD day where taking fiber just doesn't help. The only thing with meds is that it just covers the symptoms and doesn't really get rid of it. I hope this helps a little bit. I have it as take "1 capsule orally 3 times a day when needed for colon spasms" so basically I only take it when my GI tract really acts or if i want to eat bad for a day! hehe. Have a great day! Let me know what you think of it, but also remember benefiber it is a much more natural way to get rid of the severity of your symptoms and you won't have to rely on medicine because that is a doctors way of not wanting to explain the best ways to handle your problem! Anyway, let me know!
