What came first?insomnia or depression?

Well, I am about over the insomnia problems. Lately, my anxiety levels through the day are through the roof, and I seem to have alot of symptoms of depression now. So, this begs the question, what came first the depression causing the the insomnia, or the insomnia causing the depression ?

I also filled a Rx for Lexapro today and started taking it. It was prescribed several months ago, but I was reluctant to fill it until now. I am taking 10 mg, and also continuing taking the trazadone at night, 75 mg, which sometimes works, sometimes not.

Any problems with taking both the Lexapro and Trazadone. I've got an appointment with a new family care doctor next week, been considering getting a new one for awhile, and now that I've moved, seems like the perfect time.

love to hear your thoughts....thanks

" hmmmm...good question, what comes first? Depression or insomnia? Maybe it is different for everyone? A recent study I read about said that if someone has insomnia for ten years they are likely to have anxiety, but that seems like a no brainer. Did you read the post to this board, Sleep, Dreaming and Exhaustion? "

" Does it really matter what comes first? Both of them need treating. If you treat the depression the insomnia may come right and if you treat the insomnia the depression may come right. In my experience the body becomes tolerant to sleep meds quite quickly so if you need meds to sleep its a good idea to change it after a time. " This is depressing but I don't think my father has slept in 40 years - since he came home from Vietnam. He just roams the house at night.

I am bipolar, and it takes a whole elephant load of pills to get me down for the night. I can definitely tell you, the insomnia came before the mania. I take Rozerem (8mg), Xanax (4mg), and Seroquel (600 mg). An ordinary person would be down for a week with this load, but some nights it still takes me 3-4 hours to fall asleep. I have 100 mg tablets of Thorazine to take if I go more than two nights without sleep.

INSOMNIA IS A BITCH. "

" That's a question I've asked myself as well...I'm prone not to constant insomnia but to month-long bouts of it, which, when they hit, are severe. They occur when I'm not in the happiest of situations, but they do not seem to stem from any particular stressor. Then my therapists all think I'm depressed and that's what's caused insomnia, whereas I think I'm an insomniac and that's what's caused depression. Once I talked to someone who really knew sleeping disorders, I did get the sense that insomnia doesn't have to stem from depression. I think that feels right to me...I honestly do not feel depressed until it happens.

I tried Trazadone...did not work at all for me. I found Lunesta was the best. At one point a doctor wanted me on Rezorem, but I never filled the prescription. "

" i believe depression came first because i've heard of de[ressed people sleeping all day, but never heard of an insomniac who wasn't the slightest bit depressed.

btw i take seroquel and it helps anxiety and insomnia, but when anxiety or insomnia becomes overwhelming, it is worthless (as is everything else i've tried). "
