Low basal body temps

I've been charting basal body temps each morning. I was wondering if anyone would have any information as to why or what it means if they are very low. They are not even on the chart. My doc. said that it doesn't matter. Just curious. I have a thyroid problem and I've heard that could cause it. My throid is under control. Does anyone know of other possible reasons?

" I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. I AM CHARTING MY TEMPS AND THEY ARE JUST SO ON THE CHART. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO READ ANY ANSWERS YOU GET. I GO FOR MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A SPECIALIST IN A MONTH. HAVE SOME QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS CHART FOR HIM. "

" My understanding is that estrogen lowers it. As well as thyroid problems. Either way - I have a normal thyroid and barely elevated estrogen levels, and my average temperature is between 96.4 and 96.8, if I'm not doing any fertility treatments. If I'm on Clomid, it jumps up an entire degree. I don't think you should really worry about it. "

" Low thyroid function is the primary cause of low basal body temps. According to a book I have - Fertility Cycles and Nutrition (by Marilyn Shannon) - pre-ovulatory temps should average between 97.4 and 97.8. If they are lower than 97.4, there is a good chance that it's an indication of low thyroid function, even if blood tests do not indicate it. Things you can do to help this are adding iodized salt or iodine tablets, B vitamins, vitamins C, E, A, zinc, selenium and essential fatty acids found in flax oil and safflower oil. She says that with these supplements, temps can gradually rise to normal levels. The rise in temperature after ovulation directly correlates to progesterone levels. If the temps are not shifting 4 degrees, or are not staying high for 11 - 16 days, that can indicate low progesterone levels and a luteal phase deficiency. "

" Sorry - I meant 4/10 of a degree (.4) not 4 degrees in the last post! "
