Prenatal Vitamins

Are any of you on prenatal vitamins? I am NOT pg, but am taking a woman's vitamin (w/folic acid). My sister has me freaked out that my potential child will have birth defects if I am not taking prenatal vitamins.

I started to take vitamins when I fist started ttc (4 years ago), but after awahile I stopped.
Any advice?

" My RE has me taking prenatals as part of my IVF. I did the same with my last cycle as well. RE says it helps the body to prepare for PG.

Folic acid is very important in the development of a fetus. Drs recommend taking it prior to ttc. "

" I am taking woman's vitamins w/ folic acid. Do I need to specifically be taking prenatal vitamins? Or is a daily womans vitamin ok? "

" I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and I have only been taking women's vitamins and an extra folic acid supplement. I am also anemic due to a chronic condition, so I take an iron supplement too. If you are concerned I would talk to your doc, but my RE and OB were fine with the vitamins I was taking. "

" The next time you go to the store where you purchased your vitamins, compare nutrition information of the over the counter prenatals with the ones you are currently taking. Usually the prenatals have more of the daily % needed. "

" I was placed on prenatals as well. I have been on them since May of 07. I would recommend you take prenatals instead of the regular women's vitamins. "

" My RE and high risk doctor suggested I take a prenatal, so I have been for a long time now. If for some reason I don't take it then I take a seperate folic acid. I think as long as you are taking a multi vitamin and are getting in the required amount of folic acid you and baby will be fine. At times I only take half dose of the prenatal which would be like a normal multi vitamin. "

" Prenatal vitamins made me way sick. My doctor just told me to take a really good women's vitamin and I would be fine. I know women who don't take a vitamin at all and they are 6 months pregnant. But I'd rather be safe than sorry!@ "

" my doctor recommended I take a vitamin with AT LEAST 400 micrograms of Folic Acid in it (standard for multivitamins). But they prefer prenatals. "

" Prenatals sometimes make me sick too - I always take it at night and that seems to help. When I run out of this bottle I'm going to try an organic prenatal - I've heard they are much easier on the stomach.

My RE said that as long as you're taking some kind of vitamin with folic acid before you get pregnant you're fine. "
