I've been taking them about 4 years too. It's my understanding that they have pretty much all the regular ones do, but they certainly have more folic acid, which is so important.

My dr recommends always taking PN vitamins. He says it has everything you will ever need. I have friends and SIL's that only take them as well for years. I wouldn't worry. You are getting more nutrients then most women out there.

I read somewhere that it is good to give your body a break from long term prenatal vitamin use. The only reason it gave was because they are hard on your system. I am not sure how true it is but I thought I would mention it. I took them for 2 years and now that I am pregnant I have had all my blood levels drawn and everything has been fine---but like I said I just thought I would mention what I read!

Our RE recommended prenatal as well. I use the "NOW" brand b/c they are free of many ingredients I can not have. I don't think they lack in something you need, you are just getting twice as much. I will tell you though, I was sick for a few years and lost half my hair. Since taking the prenatals it has gotten a lot healthier!

another one you might consider is omega-3. i am not sure if it would be good to take it now or if you should just start taking it until after you get your bfp. but it has been proven that the dha in omega-3 helps in brain and eye development for the baby. my perinatologist just told me to start taking omega-3. plus if you have high cholesterol, omega-3 is a natrual supplement that will help keep it down. i am currently taking the gnc brand for both omega-3 and prenatals. they work great for me.

Speaking of omega-3----my prenatal vitamins come with a gel tab that is omega-3 DHA. So you might ask your doctor to just prescribe those. I was scared to just add an omega-3 for fear that it would not have the right amount (I am a constant worrier) Well good luck!!!

My fertility doctor had me on regular women's multi vitamins. They said that there's unnecessary stuff in PN vitamins and not until I actually got preggers did they have me switch to the PN vitamins. I'm sure either way is totally fine. Probably just good to be taking something. Good luck!

My RE just put me on Prima Care One. It is a once daily prenatal with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA &EPA) and 1mg folic acid. My high risk ob recommends that I stay on them when TTC, while pregnant & thru breastfeeding. I like this one cause it is easier to take one tablet with all of it instead of having to take several.
