First RE appointment

My first RE appointment is tomorrow. It is my consult appointment and I am a little nervous about it. I am afraid that they are going to suddenly find something wrong with me or tell me that I can't ever have children on my own. I know these are probably unfounded fears but I guess it is the fear of the unknown. What were your consult appointments like? How soon after it did you start treatment? I don't seem to be responding to well to Clomid, 3 failed cycles, so I am not sure if they will leave me on the Clomid and do it with IUI or move me onto something like Femera. I guess I am just looking for reassurances that the appointment will not be as bad as I think it will be. Thanks ladies! My appointment is at 12:30 so I will let everyone know how it turned out.

" Don't worry, hun. It will not be bad at all. They will of course take down your history, possible schedule some blood tests etc with you next cycle and start the plan based on your medical needs. Don't panic!!! It will be easy and you will probably feel relieved to have a new plan and move forward. "

" Good Luck!

It helps to write down any questions you have before hand because once you're there, you may forget everything you wanted to ask.

They didn't take any blood at the 1st appt because it wasn't the right time in my cycle. They told me to call back on the 1st day of my next cycle to schedule blood work and US.

I felt really hopeful and excited after my 1st appt, like finally I'm getting somewhere and I'm with someone that knows what to do.

You should also develop a good rapport with the Dr or get a good feeling from the Dr and staff because you'll be spending a lot of time at the office and they have your future fertility hopes in their hands. They shouldn't make you feel silly or stupid for asking any questions or for asking the same questions two or three times. After all, your the patient and you're paying A LOT of money for their services.

I hope this helps! "

" It depends on what tests you and DH have had done already. I would think they would do lab tests on you and probably check your tubes to be sure they are not blocked (unless you already did it). They should do an S/A on DH too. I am not sure about the meds though. I hope what ever happens it moves you one step closer to getting pregnant. I am sure the appointment won't be as bad as you are thinking.

We did a few tests, but since I had so many surgeries in my teens, we knew my tubes were bad and lots of scar tissue. But, we did not know there was male factor and wouldn't have if they hadn't tested him too. We jumped right into IVF but I got sick and we had to put it off for a few years. Then we did a cycle of IUI (useless for us) and then moved on to IVF. I think the hardest part was the waiting.
I will be thinking of you tomorrow and praying all goes well. Good luck! "

" I had my first appointment a few weeks ago. It was actually very helpful. My doctor seems very systematic and wants to conduct lots of testing before doing any treatment. I throughly outlined my visit in my journal dated 1/14/08 if you are interested in reading the specific details.

Good luck to you with your visit! "

" Don't woory about the appointment. And especially don't worry too much if they find something wrong. REs can fix a lot of things and if they know whats wrong they can probably fix it faster. All my tests indicate that nothing is wrong, I have had 4 failed IUIs and a failed IVF. Something is obviously wrong but the RE just can't find it.

Good luck and keep us informed. "

" Don't worry. Remember, knowledge is power. Once you have the information you can make a plan that will bring you sucess instead of just trying. I was terrified and it hurt to hear that not only did DH have problems, but I did too. But now we have a plan and hopefully a BFP soon. Best of Luck! "

" Thanks so much for your advice ladies. It has made me feel a little better. Having done 3 cycles with my OB, I have had some tests and stuff already done and have my diagnosis of PCOS. I am hopeful that maybe they can figure out why the cycles are not working for me. I will get on this afternoon with an update. "
