I am interested in taking Armour Thyroib but right now I have no insurance. Does taking Armour Thyroid require more blood tests and doctor visists then Levoxyl?

" I don't really know but I do know that getting your blood levels checked regularly is important. Its vital in order to know if your getting too much or too little. Either way can give you some real health troubles. "

" ANY thyroid problem requires careful monitoring, and, until you are properly regulated on anything, you will have to go fairly often for bloodwork. But the medication is not what makes the Dr visits mandatory; proper monitoring is. Once you are on the correct dose, your visits will drop to a couple of times a year, barring unforeseen complications. "

" Hi somechic1980, I agree with what the others have posted.

The amount of blood tests should be the same for either med. People are usually tested every 6-8 weeks as the meds are being adjusted. Once they are adjusted, retesting does not have to be done as often.

How long have you been getting treated? "

" I took armour thyroid for years and it requires the same amount of doctor visits and blood tests that levoxyl does. Doctors usually use armour thyroid as a last ditch effort to get you regulated. Are you having trouble adjusting to levoxyl? "

" My doctor usually takes more blood tests after making a med change or dosage change. I currently take levoxyl with armour and am quite pleased. Good luck. "

" I take Armour Thyroid. Not sure, but I think my doc prescribed it because it is natural (not synthetic). I was just diagnosed late last year. Never been on any synthetic so I wouldn't know any different.

Is there a reason why it would require more doctors visits? It's a type of thyroid medication. Why should it be any different? "

" I am taking Armour Thyroid and have been content...of course I still take yearly blood tests and of late have had to up the dosage a lot...remembering reading an health article that said that Armour Thyroid works best when it is done in a time release fashion instead of all at once...

so recently I decided to employ this ....and am getting a blood test the end of the month so we will see....Took Synthroid and it just wasn't working for me ... "

" Hi binkybink. By time relased do you mean splitting the dose? Some people benefit from doing this.

I tried it and it did not help me, but I also was not on the proper dose at the time.

From what I understand, it is better to take your meds after the blood draw or the Free T3 may be falsely elevated. "

" yes, when I say time released I do mean I split it up ..taking half in the morning and half at night....works so much better for me....but you are right, you have to have the right dosage amount to begin with....get worried about my skin, it is still so dry and so is my hair...sometimes I wonder still about my dosage...
