I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 19, I'm now 52. I was on medication, don't remember what, for 2 years, after my diagnosis, and have been off, since, due to finances.
I went to a local clinic, and was tested as normal. I don't believe their numbers were right. They wanted to treat the individual symptoms, with the exception of dry skin and hair (I have over active oil glands.), I have all of them. I haven't been back to them since. My symptoms are getting worse. Muscle cramps can happen any time, including in my face and neck. One night my whole body went into a cramp, leaving me unable to even call out for help. I really need to find a list of foods, vitamins, or something I can use to combat this problem. We're living on an average of $200 a week, and have no medical insurance. Please, can someone point me to some information? Posted on 07/06/08, 06:07 pm |

Hello,
If you go to your state office and ask for medical help your will probably qualify. They don't count the value of your house. You might be suprised they will probably help you!!! Thyroid medication is one of the cheapest medications you can find. Your will probably qualify for free medication anyway I knknow you probably don't feel like it. Or if you really feel bad try the er they have socail workers who can help you. Good luck Kathy - California

klpeach's advice to seek out the free or low cost medical assistance is spot on. I would also remind you that TSH "normal" can vary from lab to lab and anyone with hypo knows the lab results don't tell the whole story. I've noticed a lot of people with hypo also have fibromyalgia (sp?) issues--I think it may be another autoimmune issue. I'm not sure what all you can do for this but take OTC painkillers but more importantly, try not to stress so much. I know finances can put the pressure on but it could be hurting you physically as well. Take time each day to just destress and relax. Good luck

I am sorry you are suffering!
I think there needs to be a lot more research done on what levels should be listed as "norm" for the thyroid. I know that my body is what tells me best if my levels are right or wrong--and I am usually right if I go into my doctor because of symptoms and he needs to adjust my levels. I posted about low cost prescriptions in another post so check that out if you are given a perscription as it will save you money! Hang in there and best of luck! Kristin
