Desperate - went to another Endo.

I have been on synthroid for over 5 years and while my blood work was in the "low normal" range - my symptoms got worse.
I went to a new Enocrinologist who took blood and increased the synthroid (I am on 150 mcg) and re-tested and said I was in the range of low normal and that was that. Well, I went to another Endo because I was getting worse. I lost over half my hair, most of my eyebrows, continually fall asleep, ache and I sit indoors with gloves on with the tips of the fingers open and my feet on a heating pad. All of my skin just keeps on flaking. Well - the new doctor said that my blood work showed a normal range. We went on to discuss the problem and I told him that something was wrong. The symptoms I just wrote were the tip of the iceberg. The doctor insisted that in 35 years of practice that he read of maybe 10 people in the whole country who did not convert T4 to T3 and he never had a patient but if I wanted him to test me, he would humor me. A day later I got the call - he was apologetic - I WAS one of those people and he would start me on medication to replace the T3 that I haven't had for years. I even sound like a bullfrog when I talk! The reason I am sharing is to encourage anyone who is having thyroid problems and still doesn't feel right to keep pushing - get a second opinion, even a third - just keep on trying to get through to the medical community that something is wrong. I have been so ill, for so long. I lost my husband to cancer and had to sell a home and get a new place to live and I had 2 eye surgeries right after losing my soulmate of 40 years. Then I was coming home from the doctor and drove off the road into a ravine and was seriously injured. My life has had enough stress to burn out 10 thyroids - yet the doctors (who charged top dollar, by the way) would not do one simple test that would have helped so much. Oh, depression is another side effect of lack of T3. I now am trying to have hope that I can live a somewhat normal life. One other word of hope and advice - you have a computer - read all you can on your particular problem and symptoms. A lot of it was easy to understand and what was hard - I copied and brought to the doctor to explain. Posted on 05/10/08, 12:05 pm |

I am glad you finally got the right diagnosis and help you need. let us know once you have been on the medicine what difference it makes. I bet a lot of your symptoms get better or disappear. Are you going to use synthetics or Armour?
