Hi everyone. I was wondering if someone could help me with interpreting my thyroid blood test results. According to my doctor, the results don't indicate a thyroid disorder, but I was wondering if any of my numbers are borderline or on the low/high end of what's "normal."
My TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone, I believe) was 0.67 and My free thyroid was 0.9. I'm not sure if that's the exact term for it, but that's what I have written down... Posted on 08/11/08, 05:08 pm |

I totally forgot that I had posted here in the past about interpreting my results. My TSH was 0.46 at that time. I'm still not sure what's normal, or what's borderline.

I cant help you there gc as in Australia the levels are different.
Here is an example..... Free T4 Free T3 TSH If your Free's are high and your TSH low then you are HYPER. If your TSH is high and your Free T's are low then you are HYPO. It is possible to be borderline and just on the verge of high or low reference ranges. If your Free T3 is high then you are Hyper with T3 Toxycosis. That means the thyroid is overactive and usually ant-thyroid meds are given. Ask your Doctor for your full results including the reference ranges then we can hopefully help you. Take Care Debs

I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid with low TSH and normal Fr T4 and Fr T3. I would recommend you see your doc and have him go over it with you so you have a better understanding. With a TSH of 0.67 you are still in the normal range but leaning towards hyper according to my lab ranges. So, its really hard to say without your labs ranges.

Thanks for the replies. I got a copy of my lab results, and my TSH is 0.66, and my free t4 is 0.9. Oh, and in my other post, I didn't misplace the decimal. It was 0.46. If I'm understanding my doctor correctly, my levels are low but not low enough to be hyper. Does that sound about right?

Yes that sounds right. It all depends on what your lab ranges are. If you get a copy of your tests it will have the ranges on it. That will give you a better gage on where your numbers are at. If I had your numbers based on my ranges I would still be within normal but closer to hyper. Each person is different and your numbers could effect you differently than it would me. Its really hard for anyone to give you advice without those ranges. I hope you feel better soon...Kathy

Hi! If you feel like you have hypo symptoms you probably are sub-clinical. Your tsh isn't low enough for hyper. In hypo or Hashimoto's disease the tsh usually flutuates like yours is doing. Your t-4 was on the low side, if it was hyper, it'd be on the high side. Here's my lab ranges for FT4-(0.80-1.80) hope this helps.

Bransnana, what do you mean by sub-clinical? I do actually think my symptoms resemble hypo, especially being cold and tired all the time. Heck, it's almost 90 degrees outside and I'm covered in a blanket right now! Is hashimoto's where they check for antibodies? I've had that test done and it was normal. Or is it possible for me to be in the early stages of the disease? I'm not sure if it's a disease that progresses over time, or if it should show up in your results no matter what. Thanks again for the help!

yes there are antibodies for Hasimoto's disease, also specific ones for Graves. Most hypo or hyper thyroid is usually one of these, but not always. You can just be plain hypo, meaning it's not an auto-immune hypo. You can be subclinical meaning....your levels are still in the ranges. They (doctors) usually don't treat you with meds until you are out of the ranges. I would say you are hypo though, not hyper. If you keep having labwork done every 3 months or so, I bet the levels of FT4 goes down and your tsh goes up.I would keep on it and just keep having it checked. Also the antibodies testing too, that might show up too. Although you usually have the antibodies before you even have symptoms.
