I am wanting to know if anyone here has delt with having both hypo & hyperthyroid?
I have both, seem's to be more on the hypo side for a while now.
I have not been able to see my dr as of end of March 08, only in mid Feb 08 I was diagnosed with hashimotos thyroiditis & grave disease & a goiter.
I don't know what to expect, I have only had 2 appointment's with the endocrinologist, he put me on a medication to kill my thyroid, it made me breakout in very bad hive's, I had to stop taking it, so the the next step he said was to take radio active iodine, I didn't really want to do that. Shortly after my 2nd visit, I had to leave my job, too much stress, but then, no insurance, no iodine pill either. I feel like a yo-yo, Is their any type of alternative treatment's, or should I just take the iodine. No doubt, something need's to be done. I have insurance again, and am up in the air now,I'm just not sure what at this point

" The last time I saw my Endo was the fist week of April, and I will see him again August 27th. It is hard a pain to see him any sooner, so far I have only seen him twice. I spoke to him over the phone and told him how exhausted I feel and he said that I might be turning hypo but didn't say anything about the medicine dosage. Last night my blood pressure went up and I had burning sensation on my feet and hands. I had this sensation when I first found out I had hyperthyroid and wasn't taking any medicine. So I am lost now. It will be a month before I see him and in the meantime I am just praying to God that my thyroid doesn't get all messed up. I am sorry, I am just frustrated and I can keep on going about it. Try calling your doctor, call him up and see what he says. Someone needs to give you an answer. I hope you feel better. Take care!! "

" Sometimes you can get BOTH Hyper and Hypo symptoms at once...it is possible.
I know I get anxiety if I am hyper and anxiety if I am hypo.
The only way I could tell if I was hypo was...lethargic and the bowels sluggish.
Other than that, the symptoms were the same.
Please see a Doctor asap as with Hypo...Myexedema Coma can occur if left untreated and with Hyper...Thyroid storm.
You dont want either of those.

" hi, i have an over active thyroid but shows as under active it's very confusing!!! Specialist thinks it's Graves so i needto see eye specialist, have bone scan and iodine uptake scan before they will give me treatment. A close friend of mine has had radio active iodine and the results are brilliant!!! She says its like getting your life back, if this treatment is offered to me i'll take it anything is better than feeling like this all the time!!! All the best, you need to do what feels right for you, hope you find the answers soon. "

" I was diagnosed by my kaiser endo with hyper thyroidism, he says it's graves. He used the TSH, Free T4 and T3 tests only and claims they are the only tests necessary for diagnosis. I also have a goiter though it's not obvious by looking at me. I sought a second opinion by a specialist and he did those same tests plus many others and found that my results showed both hyper and hypothyroidism and advised I not take the antithyroid meds my Kaiser endo prescribed. I then found a specialist online who, given ALL my test results said also not to take the antithyroid meds due to conflicting results. Given all this extra info, my kaiser doctor STILL feels the TSH, Free T4 and T3 tests are all he needs to know that I need to take methimazole. This was a year ago and I have chosen not to take the meds and instead changed my diet to no caffeine or sugar/sugar substitute and take herbs prescribed by a nutritionist. I feel great but my tests (same 3) still show hyper. By the way, I'm 20lbs ovwerweight and have a hard time losong weight. very contradictory. "
