Why do you homeschool?

I have a two year old and plan to homeschool because I believe public schools don't provide a good enough education , nor do they aid children who are advanced or having a hard time. Also, schools are often dangerous- not only physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Bullying is a huge problem. I'm sure we all know about school shootings and bomb threats... but, how many know about the rising rate of suicide and suicide attempts by elementary school children? (law and order had a great episode on that about a year ago). I live in the south as well so religion is still prevalent in the schools. I graduated in 2003 and we still had a moment of silence for prayer at the beginning of each day. I want my son and any future children to have a good education where they can be comfortable and excel with out social bullsh*t and indoctrination. I believe that schools are abusive places that only give our children minimal knowledge and reasoning skills.

So, why do you homeschool?

" I home school because of some of the same reasons you stated....when a child has to go through a metal detector to go to school something is wrong about that. And frankly I don't want my children "socialized" by some of the miscreants that go to public school. We belong to homeschool groups and they get plenty of interaction with children of all ages and adults also. Google "homeschool socialization" and read some of the interesting articles "

" I have a toddler, but really want to homeschool in the future because, 1. I don't think children should be taught evolution as a fact when it is a theory 2. Sex education should be taught at home not in public school 3. Schools are becoming more and more dangerous 4. With home school it is one on one, the child can better understand when learning one on one and not be lost in a sea of other children. 5. no distractions 6. no time limits 7.no time or money wasted on going back and forth to school 8. you know what they are ready for and what they are not "

" butterfly, so are you going to teach it as a theory? What are you going to teach about the origins of the universe? There are theories taught in school- home and public- all of the time. Most of math and science is a good bit of theory. "

" I have an 11 year old who has severe ADHD. He has struggled in school from the beginning. I have dealt with teachers who only care about test scores and schools that have no problem letting your child get left behind.
I walked through the school hallway last year and looked at a bulletin board. I saw my sons picture under it and it said "what do you want to be when you grow up" what i read filled my eyes and heart with tears... "all I want is to have friends, be cool, and normal" Icould not let my son stay there one more day.
I do not agree with a system that thinks every child should learn the same thing at the same time, at the same pace. Every child is different.
I am currently unschooling my child, getting away from the structured curriculum that he was used to. We get up and watch the news together, we go to the public library and read books, play computer games and most importantly we talk about the things he likes and thats how I decide what he is going to learn about that day. everything we do is a learning experience... from washing dishes, to shopping for groceries. You can make anything into a lesson and have fun doing it.
I homeshcool for my son, that way he has the confidence and self-esteem to make it in such a judgemental world.
It does not matter how smart you are, how wealthy you are,or even who you know, if you dont love yourself... you will fail.
It is my job as his parent to help him achieve, and putting him first by homeschooling is a very good first step. "

" One reason I HS is that I noticed a long time ago that many adults don't seem to be able to think for themselves. Most follow the herd even when it is way out of sync for them personally or doesn't even make sense. I also see that these people are not happy.

I want my children to be deeply, truly happy in life. I want their childhood to be lived fully, not immersed in preparation for a limited life of compromise and conformity. I want them to accept only the true and few limits on their ability and potential.

I have other reasons too :) "

" eele and thriver good answers!

but i'm not really sure what unschooling is. Do they still learn essentials like math, reading, and science? from what I've heard, unschooling means you only teach them what they want to laern.. so if they don't like math do you just not teach it? "

" I used to be a school district substitute teacher, and I witnessed both sides of the spectrum. I also used to work with Special Needs kids in the same district. During all this time, our son had been diagnosed with ADHD and it took me 2 years to realize that I did not need to teach or attend graduate school, but instead my son needed me the most. The district did not help him, he could not receive benefits because he was too smart on the State Tests. My 2nd son had an IEP, and was still denied benefits, even though he displayed learning disabilities. I got fed up, I knew the system failed my 2 sons, and pulled them out. Recognizing that I had certain beliefs and convictions about how I needed to bring up my boys in a rightful way, and giving them opportunities that no institution would, I took the initiative to investigate further resources and now we are extremely blessed. Another reason why I pulled them out was because I got tired of going over material that was all related to evolution. That was the straw that broke the camels back...I asked them why can't they teach creation along with evolution so that kids can reason, and be given the argumental perspectives as to why the rest of the world holds oppositional views against evolutionary beliefs...Well, lets face it, we are still in the caveman days in reforming our school systems...what a waist of time to bring my children to an institution to get brain washed by text books that explain to kids how we are came about and what the meaning of life is all about....I truly believe that we are here for a bigger cause...We seem to be the only ones existing in this huge universe, and I believe we are more special than to say that our roots came from a rock or a bowl of amino acids. That is why I home school with a passion and loving every minute of it along with my newborn! My house is certainly not a boring place, that's for sure! "

" waist=waste

Anyway, the reason why they can't teach religion along side science is because church and state are supposed to be separate. Schools are responsible for their knowledge of math, science, and literature, but each individual parent is responsible for teaching their children religious beliefs. Plus, freedom of religion ensures that one religion not be pushed on someone with different beliefs. Teaching Christian stories in science class would not only undermine the very definition of science, but also infringe on the rights of muslims, atheists, pagans, hindus, and any other religion that does not believe in the christian bible.

bottom line? religion isn't science and can't be taught as such. I also think it's important to point out that the theory of evolution is only a theory in as much as the theory of relativity is only a theory. It is a theory in name only and is accepted as fact among the scientific community, much the same way we take gravity for fact. "
