Stopping anxiety!

I finished chemo at the end of March(yay), and the original cancer sites were clear, but a new unrelated site appeared in the PET scan. I have to be re-tested late June 2008. It is possibly a false-positive.

I also think I feel lymph node swelling in the original cancer site. I have extreme anxiety over this. I know that if it comes back it is treatable, but I am upset that my family and kids will have to go through this all over again. I cry daily and am doing what I can to stay positive (continue with life, have fun with my kids, exercise). Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the anxiety and focus on the positive?

" Hi there, I know exactly where you are coming from, as I have just been given the all clear and 3 months later, am still in remission! But am so axious about the cancer returning. Everything you are feeling is very normal for someone in your situation and there is actually a medical condition, called reacurrance fear. Trying to stay positive is easier said than done sometimes. I made sure i ate well and rested well and got plenty of exercise but I just couldnt pull myself out of the negative thinking and anxiousness. It may not be for everybody but in the end I decided to try an anti - depressant (against my families wishes.) I had a funny first couple of weeks, with some side effects but now I am able to get my situation into perspective and turn it all around to concerntrate in a positive way. Just might be worth considering them if you havent already, they have really helped me out. Whatever you choose to do I really hope you feel better soon and you get a negative test in June, Good luck
Tracey xx "

" Hi, I have almost the same situation with my Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I was diagnosed in August and my chemo ended in Feb. Then the pet scan showed additional swollen lymph node in unrelated area. Then they repeated teh pet scan and it was fine. I am still anxious and paranoid though.

In addition to simply being scared and depressed about this, Prednisone made me even more nervous.
I highly recommend taking Ativan , but no more than 2mg per day. Other than that I think praying to Jesus helped me a lot. "

" like everyone has already said...its important u know that feeling like this is normal... ur not going nuts and u will get over this.

i think its also important to realise that worrying about it will only panic you more and when u feel like this u can sometimes feel things that are not there.... its totally normal...but its a fact... the best way to get a clear picture of how u truely feel is to try and relax and forget about it for a few days..and once u have returned to u normal self, check again... thinking that you feel a swelling doesn't mean its definitely there.. i know ive been in that position a few times, as have some of my friends.

keep strong and remember than there are lots of us here to support u and from my experience having good friends will get you through this difficult time.

take care

xxx "

" I want you to know I went through the same thing you are. After Chemo they discovered a new smaller mass in a CT scan. After my Pet-scan it showed up to be scar tissue and not cancerous at all. Until that diagnosis i had such extrreeeeeeeeeeeeme anxiety. I felt short of breath, I cried all the time, I felt very isolated because nobody really understood what i was facing.. I have no real good solutionsfor anixety because i tried everything.. The best was just company and things to get your mind thinking of new things.. I have great feelings about your scan being negative! ill stay postive for the both of us. Let me know how it goes.. :) "
