Has anyone taken antidepressants and then had either/both thyroid &/or cholesterol numbers go bad?
I took antidepressants for fibromyalgia for many years. It was only after taking them that my thyroid and cholesterol numbers got all out of whack. I've had a few medical professionals (in different cities & states) tell me that they have seen some anecdotal evidence that some patients end up having to go on thyroid & cholesterol meds after being on anti-d's. Of course, since there are probably no studies on this, most medical professionals will pooh pooh this idea. But that's also what they told me when I was packing on the pounds while on effexor - that it doesn't cause weight gain. And same for lipitor - no problems with side effects. Yeah right... https://www.statineffects.com/ Sorry, I know this is part vent/rant & part question. I'd really like to know if anyone else has developed thyroid or cholesterol problems after being on anti-d's. Thanks!!! Posted on 04/12/08, 08:04 am |

Hi Wistful, I found your post thru a google search and it has given me some hope. When tests recently revealed high cholesterol/ldl levels I was perplexed. What did I do wrong? I too had been on antidepressants/mood regulators for four years and recently stopped taking them. Then I remembered hearing about Effexor and a possible link to high cholesterol readings. My Mom is taking Effexor and also has experienced weight gain and high readings. So as I've been gathering info and attempting immediate lifestyle changes, I remembered. However I was taking Wellbutrin XR and Lamictal. They did make me feel sedated, and prone to lazying around even when I wanted to get up and do things. I too noticed weight gain, maybe as a result of inactivity due to sedation, and an increase in appetite. My doctor has recommended dietary changes, weight loss and exercise, and I am seeking natural treatments before I resort to any medications. Thanks for your post. It led me to this site where there seems to be an abundance of info and support on this subject.
