My sister has been an addict for almost 8 years now (I had no idea until this past weekend that it had been that long). She has been on methadone for the past three years. As of the last 6 months she has been relapsing weekly and as of last week it has become an almost every other day thing. I don't know what to do. She is on probation for possession charges and has a court date coming up for 2 additional felony possession charges. I think she is feeling desperate and overwhelmed and has really started using a lot. She used last night and missed work today. I am so scared for her that the next time she does it will be her last. I don't know what to do! She lives in Texas w/ my mom and I am in VA. I just got home from visiting her last week. We talked and I went to the clinic with her to meet her counslors and I thought things went well. She did say she will never go to inpatient treatment, which I think she needs. Not that I'm anywhere near an expert but I dont think the methadone is working!
I'm just so upset, devistated and scared for her life. I think I already know the answer but can anyone tell me WHAT CAN I DO!? How do I get through to her and make her want to live? How can I tell her what she is doing to herself without putting more pressure on her or making her feel worse than she already does? Any advice you have I will greatly appreciate! Inpatient tx or jail. If she's like me, she will not stop. Jail may be the best thing for her. Hopefully It'll be one or the other. She sounds desperate. I needed help actually getting to a place. My brother flew in and went with me to the airport. I wouldn't have gone on my own, even though I wanted to stop.

Natalie20147, sounds like we are in the same boat, I joined this site hoping for help dealing with an addict as I don't know what to say or do either. My friend M has tried to kill herself twice, she's homeless, and she remains hopelessly addicted at age 19 despite Rehab and Detox. She just called from Detox and already knows she is going to shoot up again once she gets out. Like BillW says though, jail may be the best thing for my friend M. I feel powerless to help her, even though I see her daily. That you live so far away must make this all the more horrible for you. As best you can, don't let this ruin your life. As for methadone, several years ago I briefly dated a recovering heroin addict. She said her methadone treatment was worse than heroin, and after a year of being clean shot up because she couldn't handle the new-found stress of dating me. I've never heard anyone say anything completely positive about methadone. Best wishes for you and your sister and I'm sorry I don't have a real answer to your post.

I am a recovering addict myself and I am going through the same thing with my sister, There is really nothing we can do but wait until they want the help. I know exactly what my sister is going through but still am unable to help her because she is unable to help herself. All you can really do is lead by example, pray, and be there for her once she is willing to do what it takes. As for the methadone, I was on it for awhile but i used on top of it too. I have seen it help a few people but not many. Withdrawl lasts much longer from methadone and it's not fun... Anyways, I worry about my sister every day but there is nothing I can do. I do know that I can't push her too hard or judge her because that will just push her away...

you see meth is just as addictive as heroin its self and u get a buzz from it and you can use on top so meth aint going to work if you try SUBUTEX its a tab instead of juice but it blocks so if you use on top it doesnt work it blocks the effect of heroin so its a waste and it picks you up instead of monging you out

She needs jail. I dont belive in methadone or anything else. I shoot dope for 7 years and tryed to stop for 4 of them. Relapse after replase, somtimes rehab works, but it only works when you have HIT ROCK BOTTOM, for some people thats missing a car payment for some its selling there kids. The info you can again in a program is great but will not work unless you apply it and really really want to stop.
You cant baby opiate addicts, we will take advantage of you 100%. My thought would be she was relapsing for alot longer then 6 months, just hiding it better. Dope fiends will use dope and relapse untill the complusion to use dope is gone.
