Hepatitis C Treatment Side Effect Management Strategies

In addition to getting as much information up front about possible side effects of HCV treatment, there are several ways to manage them:

Work with a mental health provider -- you may want to start taking an antidepressant before beginning HCV treatment to help you get through it. Anti-anxiety medications may help with irritability and mood swings.

Anemia caused by ribavirin can be treated with injections of erythopoeitin (Epogen and Procrit), which stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.

Low white blood cell counts caused by interferon can be treated with injections of Neupogen, which stimulates production of white blood cells.

Interferon and/or ribavirin dosage may be adjusted to minimize side effects.
If possible, arrange the scheduling of your interferon shots so that you have as much time as possible to rest afterwards.

Ibuprofen or low-dose acetaminophen can help reduce flu-like side effects.

Develop a "care team" including medical and mental health providers and support from friends and family.

Don't be afraid to rely on your care team, friends and family for help.

" Good advice all around McKenzie. I was fortunate that when I was diagnosed, I received an abundance of the latest literature about HCV, treatment options, the possible side effects and managing those side effects. That coupled with my own research on the Internet gives me a high degree of confidence in my care providers. "
