i have hep c genotype 1a. pegasys and ribaviron on week 28. starting viral count 26 million and undetectable by PCR at week 24.
gi calls today and says "how much med you have left" and says i have undetectable viral count so can stop meds.
all this time i thought you should stay on med for a period of time after undetectable viral load to ensure treatment effectiveness and sustained viral response.
i am confused. he told me i could stay on another month.
i want to persist if it improves my odds.
help.

" My HepC specialist insisted I stay on the treatment for a full year even though I cleared the virus pretty fast. He said that way their was less chance it would return and rear it's ugly head! Ha. Ask the GI Doctor for the name of a infectious disease Doctor and give them a call. It's your life we're talking about here. Good luck, God Bless. Love Paula "

" Oh yes, I agree with the other comment. My husband is G1b and undetectable now in week 18 and he is on the year's program and may even go longer because he cleared around week 13 or so. So there may even be a chance that if treatment still is going ok for him that they will extend it to increase his odds against a relapse. So definitely talk to someone. It is your life and I know it is hard to go against your doctor, but if you can afford it, stay on treatment. "

" As far has genotype 1, I was always told by my gi, and RCN that after a undetected PCR a patient must do 36 more weeks on tx.

Now this is on type 1, which is why they give the first pcr at week 12.

See a PCR test is expensive which is why the do it only at week 12, by that time if a patient is a responder his vl will be undetected.

Usually if a patient is not undetected at week 12, they either take this patient off tx, or add an additional 24 weeks which = 72 weeks on patient who wants to go ahead and continue to try to get rid of the beast.

type 1a = 48 weeks
if you were undetected at week 24 in my experience you need to add 36 weeks.

Now what happenned with the 12 weeks PCR? "

" Hi, I am the same as you, but on week 40 shot. I was undetectable at week 24 also. Dr. wants 9 more months clear, he said, for better odds of beating the dragon. So. I will finish this tx. then keep going another 12 weeks. I think you should see another Dr. for another opinion about this. Stay strong. Rooster "
