Many of you on DS and many of my own patients ask me about taking Milk Thistle for Hepatitis C. I have always told my patients to give it a try as long as we are closely monitoring them. Here is some objective information about Milk Thistle and the lack of evidence for use in Hep C:
1) Silybum marianum (milk thistle), given alone or in combination with traditional therapy has limited scientifically proven value, although it is commonly used and probably safe 2) Because it has active properties, it continues to be studied. 3) A recent review that included 14 studies found no clear evidence of efficacy. 4) Similar conclusions were reached in an evidence report on the efficacy of milk thistle in liver disease performed through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (www.ahrq.gov). Hope this helps... Thoughts? Dr O. Posted on 01/18/08, 12:01 am |

I personaly started taking it because so many believe in it on this board. My doctors RN says similiar to what you says but she said she sees no harm in trying it just in case. So I am doing it plus my livaplex now. At this time I am using what a board member believes works wonders for her. It is Milk Thistle Schinazdra Plus berry, Made by Native Essence Herb Co.

Thanks Doc. My Dr. prescribed me milk thistle the day I went for shot therapy and I told her I was already taking 1000mg every morning. She said to continue. I have had two bloodworks done since tx started 10 weeks ago and everything looks good so far. I go for vl test next monday on my 12th week.

Thank you doc for this very imp info...I started mt even before tx and told both doc and RN...he was totally shocked when I dropped VL from 23million to 45,700 at wk5 and asked what I was doing...,.I said everything recommended and only maybe prayer (or even mt) only thing else....doesn't matter since I'm responder..just glad to think it doesn't hurt any..
1 ? I've had since heard somewhere...was told if on mt and suddenly stop it will throw your blood work all out of wack and be very wrong??? Any info on that appreciated....now just don't dare stop taking it!!!

I went through 48 weeks of treatment. I was a responder but in the end I was a non-responder. Went through weeks 18-47 with a VL of 0 only to relapse in week 48 to a 41.
I am going in this week for blood work. A fried, who did not go through treatment, gave me this recipe.... 900mg - Milk Thistle 400mg - Selinium 600mg - Alpha Lipoic Acid So far I dont feel any different? My OG VL count was 9 million in May of 2007. My last count was, I think, 4000 in May 7th of 2008? I guess if my VL is below 9 million then I can guess the combo vitamin's work?

Over the years, I've read many articles here on the web, regarding Milk Thistle, some were pro's points of view, and some con's.
But I'm sure happy to learn that it still continues to be studied. Good sign that in the end, it's probably good for the liver, helps eliminate the fibrosis linning once the patient is cleared of hep c. Thanks Dr. O gives me hope. Even though I no longer have the virus, I still very much have the fibrosis, so I've read recently off a book from Roche, that M.T. helps reduce the linning of fibrosis. So I've been giving a lot of thought about getting some for myself. What if there right, wow! would help me consideraly, since I still get that swelling of my stomach, maybe it would help with that too. Thanks again, great post. Best regards, Mckenzie One day at the time
