Discussion:
Pegasys vs Peg-Intron

View More Posts Ignore
Someone asked this question on a previous discussion:
1) The two types of pegylated interferon approved for use in Hep C are Pegasys (Pegylated interferon alfa-2a which is made by Roche) and Peginterferon alfa-2b (Peg-Intron made by Schering Plough
2) Although the two forms of pegylated interferon differ in their pharmacokinetics it is not clear that these differences have important clinical implications.
3) NO LARGE TRIALS HAVE DIRECTLY COMPARED the two forms of pegylated interferon as monotherapy OR in combination with ribavirin
4) One such trial (the "Ideal study") is ongoing (http://www.idealstudy.com/).
5) The response rates in individual trials evaluating the two forms of pegylated interferon alone or in combination with ribavirin have been SIMILAR when comparable doses of the drugs have been used according to the dosing recommendations contained in the package insert.
6) Given there are no head to head trials of the two it is difficult to conclude that the side effect profile of the two pegylated interferons varies significantly.

Hope this helps
Dr O.

" Hey Tattman!
What you are on (Infergen) is NOT a pegylated interferon (the 2 pegylated inteferons used for Hep C are listed above) but rather a standard interferon which is WHY you have to use if 3-4 times a week instead of weekly.

What does this mean?
Remember pegylated interferons were an exciting advancement in the treatment of Hep C BECAUSE the attachment of polyethylene glycol to a protein (pegylation) reduces its rate of absorption following subcutaneous injection, reduces renal and cellular clearance, and decreases the immunogenicity of the protein.
IMPORTANT POINT: All of these effects tend to enhance the half-life of the pegylated versus the native protein (so you can do once a week injections and side effect profile is better)
Hope that helps:
Dr O. "
