Our daughter has Hep B, when she was 18 months what seemed to be an allergic reaction to amoxocillin was probably geonvonicrosti(SP?) rash. We have had her liver enzymes tested every year, they have always been slightly elevated but nothing alarmin, and have always stayed the same. So we have just coasted. Well a different Dr. who did her school sports physical was concerned and wanted her tested further, well her viral load is over the top the Dr. she was referred to has never seen them this high, she had a liver biopsy and it shows beginning liver damage.
I've read about Hep B and always thought that it was the liver enzymes to watch, now I feel I have failed her in not catching this sooner, or at least making sure they were checking everything. Now this Dr. wants to start her on Entecavir and stated that she could be cured from this. I guess it has always been my understanding that you are never cured just surpressed. So now I am confused. Does this mean that possibly after the prescribed 18 month treatment she could be rid of it completely?, or is she still a carrier but that it isn't attacking her system? My daughter loves babies and my dear friend's daughter had twins almost a year ago, the daughter is terrified for my daughter to even hold them. I have tried to explain to my friend the "grandma" that nothing can be passed by holding them and that there is a vaccination for this. (We had informed dear friend because her other daughter wanted so much to babysit our daughter years ago and we thought it only appropriate that they know); there was no problem what so ever, Until now. Daughter keeps asking why she can't see them or hold them. Sorry to go on, Just worried and frustrated for my daughter. Also living in rural America sometimes doesn't help much. When she was a first grader someone in the school district foundout and took it to the school board without our knowledge and "hell" broke loose. One of them was on ambulance squad and the other a teacher who both are taught commensense practices with bodily fluids. I'm sorry to go on, does anyone have any experience with Baraclude(Entecavir)? Thank you Posted on 12/12/07, 02:12 am |

Hi there
I wouldnt think twice about the fact that you havent treated her until now...that was probably the proper course of action for her. Hopefully she gets a complete and sustained remission so yes...she can be "cured" in the sense that the Hep B virus will never be active in her again. Here are some details about Entecavir. 1) It was FDA approved in April 2006 for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection in patients with evidence of active viral replication and either evidence of persistent elevations in serum aminotransferases (AST or ALTH) or histologically active disease (fibrosis on biopsy) 2) It is classified as an anti-retroviral nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) similar to Lamivudine which has been used for years in Hep B 3) Entecavir is effective in suppressing HBV replication in treatment-naive patients (patients who have never been treated previously) and in patients with a history of lamivudine resistant HBV infection. 4) Entecavir slows the progression of chronic hepatitis B infection and improves liver inflammation and fibrosis caused by HBV 5) The most commonly reported adverse events for entecavir were headache (2% with 0.5 mg dose, 4% with 1 mg dose), fatigue (1% with 0.5 mg dose, 3% with 1 mg dose), dizziness (< 1% with both doses), and nausea/vomiting (< 1% with both doses). Hope this helps Keep us posted on her progress Dr O.

Thank you this is helpful. So this can also help the liver heal itself of fibrosis tissue?
She will have baseline lab done then begin treatment be checked again two weeks after starting then each month thereafter. I pray this works. She loves life, people and has other issues besides this to deal with. She is a character!

Hi,
I've been on Baraclude for 18 mos and I've been feeling really good. My viral load has been undetectable ever since, my liver enzymes are normal also. I will keep taking the medication because I haven't develop antibodies (the titers need to be 10 or more,)and stopping right now I might get a huge flare and damage my liver. Yes, we can be cured. Not too many dr. believe in that but it does happen. I belong to a online support group and there are a few people that got cured by taking Peggasys or Hepsera. Hopefully the same thing will happen with Baraclude. Good luck to your daughter and start her on the treatment ASAP.

Thanks for your comments. She has started the Baraclude, and is handling it very well. Her viral load is significantly lower still detectable but much lower! We go in in 3 weeks to have labs again and see where we are.
She is so excited to be on the volleyball team! She does tire easily but has determenation.
