Yesterday, I started a screening for a reseach study at Shands hospital in Gainesville, Florida, on a new drug to help cure HCV. Their are 15 other reseach places in the United States which are part of this study for genotype 1 and are now starting on 2 and 3 for people without any previous treatments.
Four out of five receive this new Drug (RO5024048) which is the third stage of the study. So far it has an 85% success rate (now only 40% without it with genotype 1) and in four weeks most virus counts are undetechable. I still have to go throught with the interferon and Ribavirin, but maybe for a shorter time frame. Waiting on blood tests now with a biopsy scheduled next week. Every thing is paid for by the drug company even the Biopsy. Also they are extra cautious about my heatlh, with urine, stool, blood and visits with a doctor on regular basics. If this doesn't cure me at least it may help other future HCV brothers and sisters. This could be a good way for others without insurance to get tx. Thanks for the news, gatorbuzz. How about people w/genotype 1 that have had previous tx, like the ole'man? Will they be able to take the drug? Our best wishes to you as you fight your HepC - much success to you!! Skeeter & the ole'man
