I have heard conflicting reports on the subject of alcohol post tx. As soon as I was dx with hep c, I quit drinking and have heard of quite a few people that started after tx. I personally know 4 people that thought they were able to drink again. Has anyone heard this? I hate to admit it but I miss my wine. I often entertain in my back yard in the summer and we swim, eat, drink and be merry. I have been a bartender for 15 years and not to brag but I make some pretty good drinks. Please don't I'm done...............any comments will be appreciated.~Rebecca~

" I am not a big drinker, just wine once in a while, but when I go to Maui, I do like Mai Tais! I am currently at zero VRL since tx started. We had a trip already planned for October this year to Maui. I asked the doc, if I stay at zero vrl, could I have a Maitai at sunset in Maui. He said yes! He did say, he would not suggest anyone who struggles with drinking to go back to drinking once done with tx, but a Mai Tai or a glass of wine for me every once in a while after tx and zero load would be okay. My tx will be done in September, and I will hopefully have a continued zero VRL, so we plan to celebrate on our trip! "

" Don't drink; you are harming your liver.

Honestly, is alcohol all THAT important to you? Will you life be crippled without it?

Study up on how alcohol affects your liver and then make your own personal decision.

To me, I decided that I would rather have a healthy liver than sit back with a fine cool pint of Guinness.

Yes, I LOVED my black beer, but the day that I was dx'd with the virus, I stopped all drinking completely. That was in 2002 or so, and while I think about it from time to time, I don't miss it because my liver matters to me.

A healthy liver is strained and made to work harder when you drink. Now, just imagine your poor liver which is already working overtime trying to fight off the virus, and you want to make it work even harder by that lovely glass of wine?

Sure, people convince themselves that it's OK to drink after tx, even if they have cleared the virus. Hey, there are even some people who think it's OK to drink while they are doing tx!
Crazy fools, I say!

Hey it's your choice, but I would say just keep mixing them for others, but pass on drinking them yourself. "

" I am mad, sad and frustrated beyond belief. I probably should not write what I am about to write but I am going to voice my opinion.

I feel that people have the right to make the choice to drink or not to drink based on fact!

It has not been proven to me that if I have one glass of wine in the future(after treatment and beating hep c) it will bring back the hep c virus! It seems like people who say DON'T EVER DRINK are trying to make those of us who choose to drink after treatment feels guilty and I don't think that is right!

Does minimal alcohol consumption hurt your liver to the point of making hep c come back really? WHERE IS THE PROOF? Will it take years off my life? WHERE IS THE PROOF?

Please show me the statistics that prove if you have a glass of wine or a beer once in a while that it will have this terrible effect.

Now...
Here is my question to you who are so against the consumption of any alcohol after successfully completing treatment and getting rid of hep c...do you also refuse to take pain medication and antidepressants and other types of medication. Have they not been proven to be harmful to your liver?

Get what I am saying...

How about coloring your hair? All the chemicals in hair dye get processed by your liver....hmmm do you think those chemicals are good for your liver?

What about toxins from smoking cigarettes? Are they too not harming the liver by making it work harder than it should!

How about inhaling cleaning product fumes or getting the product on your skin...yup, they can harm your liver too!

hmmm...are all of you using all natural cleaning products, not coloring your hair, etc?

If I don't have a problem with drinking, is it really, really going to hurt me to have a drink any more than it hurts me to take pain meds or color my hair or...

Do I need to feel the same guilt for taking pain medication as I do for having a glass of wine.

What a can of worms I've opened.
Sorry.

If I can't even have a drink while enjoying a perfect moment on the beach with the man I love in the future then what the heck am I going through all this frigging treatment torture for? "

" Wow-what a can of worms here! First I would like to apologize, for my flippant response about have a Mai Tai in Maui when I am done with tx. I realize there are people who struggle with alcohol, and my answer was not very forward thinking. I would never advocate drinking of any kind. My husband was raised in an alcoholic home, and we both know first hand how terrible that can be.
I fortunatley do not have an liver damage at this time, and am at zero viral load. So for me to have a Mai Tai, at sunset it would not be harmful. All in moderation. But if I had any sign of the virus or an ounce of damage, I would not touch the stuff ever again.
All people have a choice to make, and they should make it on thier own individual needs. If I offended anyone here, please accept my sincere apologies. I myself would never have anything to drink knowing someone I was with had an issue with it. I would never want my actions or choices, or comments to cause someone to stumble in the area of alcohol.
Sincerely,
5starr "
