I have heard conflicting reports on the subject of alcohol post tx. As soon as I was dx with hep c, I quit drinking and have heard of quite a few people that started after tx. I personally know 4 people that thought they were able to drink again. Has anyone heard this? I hate to admit it but I miss my wine. I often entertain in my back yard in the summer and we swim, eat, drink and be merry. I have been a bartender for 15 years and not to brag but I make some pretty good drinks. Please don't I'm done...............any comments will be appreciated.~Rebecca~

" since there is no test to measure if the virus is 0, we can safely assume that maybe there are a few viral cells left. Alcohol is lighter fluid that can ignite those few cells that might have otherwise withered away or remained dormant. If you have to drink, wait until after your 6 month PCR...it isn't worth the risk. "

" By no means did I mean that I wanted to drink while on tx. My question was meant for after tx.............. Really I have already come to terms with the fact that I may never be able to drink again But it would be nice to have a drink once in a while. "

" I understood what you were saying. I also meant after tx. Until a test is developed to measure 0 it is russian roullette. My hubby's boss drinks after tx....after the 6 month PCR. I'm not sure I would be willing to gamble like that....Undectable is a beautiful word.

Think of it like diabetes. There are just some food items that are not the wisest choices...

" My doctor said that I should not drink. She said that it is like taking gasoline and pouring it on an open flame. My husband passed from liver cancer about 2 years ago, he was one that continued to drink a couple of beers after work everyday -knowing that he had hepatitus C. My doctor said that I could have a drink once in a blue moon but that it was better just to leave it alone. I understand how you feel - I have always enjoyed having a glass of wine, especially on Friday nite, after a long week at work but since going on treatment and relapsing - it is to my best interest to just leave it alone. I have made a couple of exceptions and had a couple of small glasses of wine for special occasions, like when my son got married and when all my friends came down from Michigan to visit me. I really do not think it will hurt once in a "blue moon" to enjoy a small glass of wine. "

" Askye has this posted in Recommendations.
NNDIC National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse

Scroll down to: Who should not be treated? There is a section on alcohol use and therapy.
This is a great overall site.

" When my Doctor asked if I drank, I said no. Then I told him I did have a shot of Bourbon while on a trip. He just said as long as it not something you do everyday, the every now and then but not often drink probably won't make much difference. He said it is best not to drink at all, but 3 - 4 drinks a year won't make much difference. "

" This is a hard one, I know you probably want to here that it is ok to have an odd one, now and again, and if i am totally honest with you, my gastro told me that the odd one now and again was ok (before i started tx, alcahol and tx definate no). However, I had two pints of larger shandy on xmas day and was shitting myself with worry. Alcahol speeds up the hepc, there is no doubt about this, IT IS JUST NOT GOOD FOR YOU. Do you know what condition your liver is in yet? Really Rebecca, the best chance you can give your body, is to abstain totally. Its not forever, so help yourself. "
