My husband just finished chemo and radiation treaments for nasalpharnex cancer and is still weak and can not taste or eat. He is surviving on boost or carnation instant breakfast. and this too is getting old. he is hungry and all food taste like grease to him. It has been 10 days since his last radiation and 19 days since last chemo.
How long will it take to be able to eat!!

" My husband had 39 sessions of radiation, and recently stopped chemo due to pain. He is just now beginning to eat solid food (after 4 months last radiation treatment).
Some food is too hard to swallow. He still has a peg tube. He supplements with formula. We found a GNC Protein Powder which has a lot of calories and helps build muscle mass (french vanilla). The powder is tasty and does not bloat or leave an after taste like the formula prescribed by the hospital. My husband lost 55 pounds and has regained 6 pounds. It is a slow healing process. He is taking the supplement by mouth with milk 2x a day. I am trying to get him to 3x a day in addition to solid food.
Recommend food such as chicken noodle soup, oatmeal, liver & onions, eggs, and I make a mean custard pie. My husband has developed a sweet tooth. I have made 6 cheese cakes this month. I figure it has protein from eggs, and cream cheese. "

" budsmama, It was six weeks after my final radaition treatment before I was able to eat anything besides my home brewed milk shakes. Then it had to be bland. I remember the first time I ate a french fry and it tasted like saw dust. It was probaly a year before I was back to most of my pre-treament diet. To this day I still do not like chocolate of any kind. "

" I'm still doing raiation and chemo for tonsil cancer and the taste of everything definately sucks.
Try chicken soup like chicken and stars since the noodle pieces are small and easy to swallow when your throats hurts and at leat for me it doesn't taste bad. Everyone is different and it takes months for some to regain their taste from all the people I've spoken with. I'm praying it won't be that long for me but I still have a week to go after today and tomorrow. I soak bread in the soup for extra calories too if he isn't too sore to swallow that. I even (on a good day) mince up chicken AND I do mean mince it up into small bits. Any protein he can get is the best. "
