Hand & Foot Abnormalities Information

The spectrum of congenital upper extremity deformities include a variety of defects or anomalies ranging from the partial duplication of a single digit or thumb, to the complete absence or failure of formation an entire limb. These uncommon anomalies may occur singularly, or may occur in combination with deformities. In addition, these anomalies may be an isolated finding at birth, or they may be related to a systemic or generalized syndrome. One of the more common abnormalities is clubfoot.

Congenital deformities of the hand represent some of the most challenging problems faced by hand surgeons. In many cases, the function of the hand and limb may be greatly improved by reconstructive surgery. Currently there are efforts being made to better understand the causes of these deformities.
