HPV and Smoking...

We've all heard, if we smoke, our doctor tell us that it is bad with HPV. But rarely have they offered a thorough explanation of why - other than lowers immunities, is poison, etc.

Well, I've done some research and have discovered that beyond the poisons in cigarettes, it is nicotine itself that creates the risk.

Read this from the Encyclopedia:

"Nicotine and the increased cholinergic activity it causes have been shown to impede apoptosis, which is one of the methods by which the body destroys unwanted cells (programmed cell death).

Since apoptosis helps to remove mutated or damaged cells that may eventually become cancerous, the inhibitory actions of nicotine create a more favourable environment for cancer to develop."

It occurs to me that if nicotine is inhibiting the removal of mutated or damaged cells, then smoking really is the number 1 risk factor for fighting dysplasia and HPV.

I've had an "aha" moment that prompted me to rip off my nicotine patch. But after my third diagnosis of lesions on the cervix and two surgeries to remove them, I am ready to endure 72 hours of misery rather than put any more nicotine in my body.

Thought I'd share.

" MissDina, thanks for sharing the info. Both smoking and long term exposure to second smoke is bad for anyone but in our cases with HPV it just increases the chances for cancer to develop and it also can stimulate the regrowth of warts...according to my gyn/ob. "

" Right on!

I'm frustrated that doctors don't feel like they can give you the proper explanation for things. Like we wouldn't be able to understand it or something.

Having the proper explanation lends relevance to the topic. All doctors tell you that smoking is bad. But to take it a step further and explain what it will do to your body in a particular scenario sends the message home. "

" I'm struggling with not smoking. I have felt very motivated...and cut down significantly, but still break down and smoke...down to a couple every couple days...

I have a pack I broke down and bought Monday- trying to make it my goal to not buy another pack... if they are here, I am too tempted and it is too easy to rationalize in that moment...

One thing that has helped me to really cut down and get past tempting moments is to smell my hands and consider the fresh taste in my mouth and then think about how nasty my breath and hands will smell if I smoke... "

" Well....I am at 70 hours nicotine free and have to share that it was not as difficult as they cracked it up to be.

Once I did the research, and understood what I was going to be facing, it made it that much easier to get through.

What you need to remember about nicotine replacements is that you are still putting nicotine in your system, and nicotine is a problem - especially to those of us who have HPV. But you area also prolonging your withdrawal.

The same holds true to falling off the wagon. Every time you take a puff of a cigarette, you go right back to "needing" x amount of nicotine for your nicotine receptors to stay calm. So, essentially, you go right back to square one.

We can do this, folks. Give it 72 hours and remember that nicotine is the enemy - in whatever form it comes in. "
