" So, a year ago you already had HPV? If you already had HPV, what type was it before this new strain? If you've been having unprotected sex, then I think it could be possible that you exposed yourself to a new strain. The colposcopy should tell your doctor more. I had a colposcopy about two years ago and it just basically confirmed that I had cervical dysplasia, because sometimes the pap smear is wrong. "

" you may have been or you may not - it's hard to tell. It could be that you got a new strain, or it's the same strain, or a different strain that you have before but was just dormant then and is active now. Personally, I wouldn't worry about why you're getting a colposcopy now. I know it's easier said than done, but you're already doing a great job by getting up to date with your exams. It may be just that they want to make sure it's really low grade dysplasia and nothing worse because PAP results are not always accurate. Best of luck! "

" You could have certainly been exposed to more than one form of HPV. There are hundreds and I read somewhere that some doctor said it's like your cervix has a cold because that's how easy it is to catch it and there are so many strains. Most people have more than one strain and while one might be apparent on a Pap, a colposcopy gives the doctor a chance to actually look at your cervix to visually see the dysplasia and to take tiny biopsies to be analyzed. I guess doctors really can't say more than that just from looking at the results of a Pap smear so they need to look further in order to find more answers. Good luck. "
