hi
can anyone tell me if you only get asked for a colposcopy if its high-risk HPV that you've been diagonosed with? i got a letter about 3 weeks ago from the hospital to say that they had found evidence of abnormal cells in my cervic and also evidence of HPV and asked me to go for a colposcopy. i went for it this week and doctor told me my cervic was fine and there was no abnormal cells and that it was just a positive-false and the abnormal smear can be caused by hormonal changes and stress and to go back 6 mths times for another smear, so now i dont even know if i have HPv, much less than if its high-risk or low-risk, how am i going to find out? You might want to check with your doctor if he/she did an HPV test on you in addition to the colposcopy. From my experience, a colposcopy is a more detailed examination of the cells in your cervix. It is usually done after they've found some abnormal cells through a PAP, but this does not necessarily mean that you have high risk HPV. Your best bet would be to ask your doctor if he did find HPV during those examinations.

Umm, when they did your colposcopy didn't they take biopsies? If they did, they wouldn't be able to tell you that day if you had abnormal cells...or no hpv...he would be able to see that you didn't have warts, which is usually the case with high risk HPV.
I was told I had an abnormal pap....precancerous cells were found. It wasn't until my dr did the colposcopy that I found out I actually had HPV (which caused the cell changes).

May not even have HPV. You may just have the onset of abnormal cells on the cervix. Unless your gyno comes back with a result of either CIN1, CIN2 or CIN3 then you have HPV.
In the meantime, if not, then keep on top of your follow up pap appts. Most likely, if not HPV then the cells with reverse back to normal.
