Hi, just joined here today. Unfortunaltely not new to Gout. I am 36, had my first attack at 31 and was doing okay, about 1 or 2 attacks a year.. fastfoward to May 15 2008, got another minor attack but the evil Gout has gotten its grips on me, and have had 1 attack about every 2 weeks. I finally broke down and started the Allopurinol this past friday so we'll see what happens. My uric acid level in blood is 8.8, my Urine turned up normal level.
Anywhoo.. I was reading where Vitamin C can help, but there is also warnings to "avoid megadoses" of vitamin c as it can cause it to get worse. I like drinking that Vitamin Water, but on some flavors it has "250%" of daily Vitamin C requirements.. is that too much?

" A recent medical journal paper showed the vitamin C helps keep down uric acid because it counteracts the unique effect of fructose, which causes excess uric acid generation. Any more than 500 mg per day of vitamin C gives no added benefit. An alternative is to avoid fructose, which is a particular type of sugar. It is about 50% of cane sugar (table sugar) and about 50% of high fructose corn syrup, which is used to sweeten so much of out processed foods and drinks. Fructose is the sugar in most fruit, but when you eat fresh fruit you get vitamin C along with the fructose. You get fructose in fruit juice too, but I'm not sure that you are getting all the vitamin C that's present in the fresh fruit. "

" I have read that Vitamin C is bad and I have read it is good. I have found that there are alot of contradictions when it comes to gout. My husband and I went to a specialist and all he said is stay away from HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP and drink alot of water! After years and years of suffering and $250 that was all he had to say. I think everyone is maybe a little different as far as what makes them have an outbreak. My husband can't even have a bite of any shellfish. He was like you but for 3 years every two weeks. He started eating frz bing cherries and hasn't had an outbread in a few months and actually just got a job.
Good luck to you. I hope you gain control over it before it controls you. "

" I just found this when I was looking up allopurinol. Didn't say how much is too much.

Taking too much vitamin C may make the urine more acidic and increase the possibility of kidney stones forming while you are taking allopurinol. Therefore, check with your doctor before you take vitamin C while taking this medicine. "

" In one small study (I have forgotten which study) people who took 4 grams of vitamin C (but not lower amounts) had an increase in urinary excretion of uric acid within a few hours, and those who took 8 grams of vitamin C per day for several days had a reduction in serum uric acid levels.

Thus, supplemental vitamin C could, in theory, reduce the risk of gout attacks. However, the authors of this study warned that taking large amounts of vitamin C could also trigger an acute attack of gout by abruptly changing uric acid levels in the body.

Despite this concern, some doctors recommend vitamin C supplementation (sometimes starting with one gram per day) as a method for reducing elevated uric acid levels.

As always, I would recommend that you consult your doctor first!

To your health,
Alvin

" I think I have had an episode this past week but I have not seen the doctor. A year ago I became quite ill with a respiratory infection. Since my activities were limited, I began taking FiberChoice with Chromax and Green Tea as a supplement. I stopped taking it 2 weeks ago. This past week my index finger and joint swelled ,was hot, stiff and extremely painful. I did a dozen self-help, internet-surfing ideas and nothing helped until yesterday....I took a
FiberChoice early in the am and again late pm. This morning the hand is nearly normal.
My diet habits are not the cause and I am guessing my body can no longer regulate the uric acid levels without some help. If this is truly my relief...it is so easy and worth a try. VERY LITTLE PAIN TODAY !!

Post 5 ..Thanks a bunch for the link. "
