Longest Attack?

I'm on my third gout attack. My first came at 27, now I'm 31. The first two attacks were easily controlled by anti-inflammatories, but this third one is a beast. The anti's have done nothing to alleviate the pain or shorten the attack. It's been three weeks now, and I'm still hobbling around like an old drunk. I miss the gym!

What's the longest attack you guys have experienced?

Also, I've eaten cherries, drank the juice, and have been taking vitamin C pills, but nothing seems to help. In fact, the only thing that really seems to help is to stay off my foot, but that's impossible.

" My longest attack was about 3 weeks. I finally saw an orthopedic surgeon who drained about a quart of gunk off of my knee then shot it full of cortizone and lidocaine. I went in on crutches and 24 hours later played 9 holes of golf!! I've also had real ggod luck with those prednisone dose packs,(take six the first day, five the second day etc.) but they sure are tough on the guts. "

" Chev, DocDMT is absolutely right about the dangers of long-term uas of cortisone and prednisone. But it seems from your personal write-up that you no longer get gout attacks because of your daily use of allopurinol, so that warning should no longer apply to you. But here is another warning that may apply. Your gout attacks were very likely a warning that you have sleep apnea, a warning that is now silenced by the allopurinol, but the sleep apnea would still be present. Sleep apnea has many life-threatening long term consequences. A recent edition of the Family Practice Newsletter reported on a long term study that shows leaving moderate or severe sleep apnea untreated reduces your life expectancy by 18 years. If you want many more years to enjoy with your beloved granddaughter, I urge you to get tested for sleep apnea, and to follow through with the recommended treatment to overcome it. "
