Too young?

Is 19 too young to get gout? I have struggling with gout-like symptoms in my right big toe for several weeks now and it is making life hell. I am 3 months post-op of major spine surgery and my grandmother had gout. But I was wondering, am I too young for this? Everyone makes fun of me and calls me old. I went to my PCP and he said it is possible but he wants me to see my ortho doc before he touches me. I see ortho on the 22nd. Any feedback would be appreciated!! I feel like a 19 year old trapped in an 80 year olds body and it sucks

" sorry to hear that you are dealing with gout at such a young age. Do you have family history of gout? A blood test will be able to tell if you have high levels of purine under normal conditions (no beer/alcohol, no organ meats, no seafood for a week prior to test).

The good news is that with any luck catching it early will avoid long term damage that can occur over a period of years with untreated gout. "

" was diagnosed with hyperuricemia when I was 21. Wait take that back I was misdiagnosed unil I was 26!! My first gout attacks were at 21 but noone could figure the cause. They didn't think to check my uric acid level because I had no family history. Then I find out at 26 that I was Ar4tficially Inseminated and so they tested my uric acid levels. They were 26.5. Needless to say get it fixed or get the right meds when it happens to you. "
