I just wanted to hear from others, how they went about telling their kids that they are gay. My son is 9 years old.

Thanks for asking this question, I was just gonna ask the same thing, even though I am not in a relationship, I wanna be ready when the time comes. I think my 10 yr. old will take it pretty bad.

My son was 9 when I came out. My partner had been living with us for three months before I let him and his little brother know that we were in love.
He wanted me to know he was straight...we laughed and told him we loved him anyway. He had a chance to get to know Jane before we told him, and they love each other. We made sure he understood that we would let HIM be the one to decide when to tell his friends. Although we did let his teachers know so that she could deal with anything that came up (but we told her in confidence). He had lots of questions...even asked if gay people were happier than straight people because he'd never seen me so happy and affectionate. He eventually told all his friends and is like any child...he'll tell someone when he's comfortable with them, or if it even comes up. He invites friends over, we've taken him to Pride Parade events, and all is well. It takes them time to get used to it...let's face it, how long did it take some of us to figure it all out? Just give as much information at they need (in other words, just as much as they ask for, some things you just don't need to go into). PS Quick note...my little guy was 6 when we told him and wanted to know when Jane was going to have a baby by me....it was so cute!
