I am a new member. My son is six. He has Fragile X Syndrome. He is considered severe. Since he was three we have tried every summer to potty train him. He does have some signs of being ready for this. He can dress himself (sometimes the shirt or shorts are on backwards etc), but he can pull his own pants up. I would like to hear from anyone who has a child with Fragile X and is considered severe, what worked for their child. Also, at what age they were potty trained. I have heard that some children are not trained till age nine. My sons speech is very delayed (about 12 months or less), but he understands a lot more than he can say. Thank you.

My son is considered severe and he is still not fully potty trained. He is 11. He does use the toilet about 95% of the time, he just doesn't tell us when he needs to go. And he has the ability...he just doesn't. We have to put him on the potty every 2-3 hours. But he uses it every time.
When he was about 8 or maybe 9 we decided to get rid of the pullups. He was dry all night and had been for years. We had a few weeks of consistent accidents but he started to get sick of the constant changes and he also realized more and more of what we were wanting through excessive praise. It was long and stressful but it happened.

seratedsky,
Thank you. Our son has also gone dry all night for the last three years. It is just hard to let him know what we want him to do, since his speech is so delayed. Thank you for giving me hope. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
