I am a binge eater and compulsive shopper. I have charged $2K this month alone. I saw my therapist tonight she is the best. Here are some great tips she gave me
My Goals (when I about to binge) Say to myself 1. I will be aware of the thoughts, justification and planning that I am doing. I will not believe it. I tend to plan my binges on when my husband and son are not home 2. I will interrupt the cycle of thinking, planning, justifying and then binging and purging. NOT ALL THE TIME-I will practive interrupting each time showing & proving it is possible Its not a all or nothing thing. It consists of baby steps. If I go 2 days without a binge and then have one, it is okay, because I know I can go 2 days without one, and eventually the days without one will be longer and longer. Hope these words help you as much as they are helping me Will Posted on 10/17/07, 07:10 pm |

I am also an overeater & compulsive shopper. I buy & eat things to feel better.
Your post has been helpful but don't know what I will do if these feelings get interrupted? These compulsions have filled a void in my life. What would I substitute?

She asked me some things I like to do when I am stressed. I go out on my back deck (no matter the weather) sit down and look at the stars or breath deeply. That is my interruption to my thoughts

I don't remember the last time I had a chance to just take a break & look up at the stars. I don't have a deck, but I see what you mean. Maybe I could just listen to some music to lift my mood!

my therapist recently gave me very similar advice about interrupting the cycle of negative thought before it results in a binge behavior. she made me make a list of things that i enjoy doing that involve some sort of change of scenery, even if it is just moving to another room. that way i can just look at my list and pick a distraction (that i enjoy!) to focus on rather than binge. she said making a list is key so you don't have to take the time to think of something and risk slipping back into a negative thought cycle.

Wow, I jsut wanted to thank you for posting these great ideas from your therapist! I haven't been able to afford to see a therapist, yet I've really wanted to get some ideas, because my bing eating is way out of control.
Just tonight, I really admitted to myself that I am a food addict, and that it's out of hand. As soon as I realized that, I realized that I have these cycles, and that I need to break them... ...your ideas, especially the idea of a list, are exactly what I needed to hear tonight. I'm happy I came across them, and I thank you for sharing them.
