I'm new and have been fighting eating disorders all my life, but I am seriously losing with the binge eating. I'm not restricting, not purging, just binge eating in private every night. I don't have any other options but self-help, and am hoping this is an active forum.
Once I start to binge, it's become nearly impossible to stop, although I know it's NOT impossible. I seem to go into a trance. I eat things I would never eat when not binging, things that I'm allergic to, and mass quantities of it all. I've gotten to the point where I can start telling myself "ok, you don't need to do this, you just want to. every time you go back for more you make it worse. you will feel better tomorrow if you don't eat that chocolate now. you no longer deprive yourself, so you don't need to eat now. there will always be donuts and chocolate at the grocery store. food is not going to disappear tomorrow" but it's like I'm a bratty teenager, who hears it but just doesn't care. I'm looking for a place to check in daily. Posted on 05/12/08, 06:05 pm |

Welcome. Admitting the problem is so important. Is there something that is triggering the binges? Are you tired, angry, lonely, etc?
If you need support I am here for you.

Thank you so much. Just knowing someone is out there, at this moment, is comforting. I'm realizing I'm binging when sad, upset, anxious, lonely, BORED, feeling worthless. It's like I'm using food to escape, JUST like I did with drugs and alcohol. "I had a bad day, so I deserve some candy bars, and cookies, and chocolate milk, it's a special occassion". How did a special occassion become everyday? I never in a million years would have thought binge eating could be as hard if not harder to conquer than substance addiction. Going cold-turkey on food isn't an option.

Food addiction or binge eating disorder is probably one of the hardest things to beat because food is always in our faces... you cannot LIVE without food... so please take it easy on yourself... its definately a process, one foot in front of the other, min by min , hour by hour thats really all you can do... Don't get caught in telling yourself tomorrow i'll be "good" because tomorrow never comes, and I know this... start right now today this min... figure out WHY you want to binge and go from there....

You will find a lot of support and unconditional understanding here on DS. I joined in February and I have checked in almost every day since and made some fantastic friends. I make a lot of use of the journal and I find it very cathartic to write down how I feel.
I know everyone comes to this sit in crisis and we all have individual journeys to make but as a word of encouragement I am 42, I have overeaten and binged since I was about 8 years old but I HAVE BEATEN IT, I promise you it can be done and when the time is right you will be free from this. Best wishes T x
