Shin Splints?

I love to run but lately have been having pain on the inner portion of my shins (particularly the right one). Anyway, I looked up a bit on shin splints and how to treat them and about the only thing I found was to put ice on them and wait it out, the thing is I'm going crazy! I hate not being able to run and when I have to take a break it seems like it is much more difficult to get going again. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to help heal up shin splints or prevent them from happening. Thanks!

" I find that in addition to icing and rest...stretching really well AFTER my runs...really cuts down on the shin splints. "

" Yes, once you get them its "RICE":

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Usually its from having calf muscles that overpower the other muscles that oppose them. One trick I learned is to hang a paint can on your foot and lift it up to strenthen them. Also walking around on the balls of your feet with your toes off the ground will strenthen them.

It can rarely be compartment syndrome, which is serious. You can read about that.

They make compression sleeves that I use. The one I have is called "Cho-Pat". "

" Hey, I am prone to shin splints (lucky me) and even had a stress fracture from them at one point. The things that have helped me recover and have prevented me from getting shin splints in general are:

1) Good running shoes with propper insoles
2) Calcium Pills (wonderful)
3) Stretching (instant relief of pain but not long term)
4) Strength building ( so like weight lifting to tone muscles in calf area)
5) Pre-Pavement training ( in the gym on a treadmill or elliptical - pavement is brutal for untoned muscles)
6) Rest - as much as that sucks
7) Last but not least, ICE!! :) ( or frozen vegetables works too :P )

Good Luck!! :) "

" I would get it only on my right side too...I found if I lace my shoes differently. This will be hard to explain over the internet...but I don't make the criss cross over the middle. I think I skip two holes. It takes the pressure off the top of my foot and amazingly helps with the shin splints. Message me if it doesnt' make sense and I could take a picture! "
