Burned out?

Hi everybody,
I have been an avid exerciser/yoga practitioner for years now. I tend to workout 2 hours a day 5 days a week. Well, I'm on Tuesday this week and I just don't WANT to do anything, my yoga practice or my exercise routine. I'm trying to understand what's going on. Maybe I'm just burned out. I'm so hard on myself. Maybe I need to make myself live without exercise for a week. I do mix it up so it's not boredom...... I don't know....... Help me out please? Thanks guys, you're awesome.

" 2 hours 5 days a week...i'm burned out for you! I think we all need a break once in a while. I go through periods where I could work out for hours on end every day of the week, then I go through periods when I'd rather take a beating! And I don't care what anyone says, taking a day off in the middle of the week just makes me feel good sometimes! It's like playing hookie from school, you know.

This too shall pass:) Give yourself an unplanned day off. "

" This is a 2 day break so that's why I'm freaking out. I just don't feel like it. Maybe my body is telling me something. "

" I think you should just listen to your body; if it's hinting at NOT working out, then don't!

I am at the gym every day. I spin 2 hours on Mon Thu and Sat, and 1 hour on Tue Wed and Sun.
I work out with my trainer on Mon and Wed or Wed and Fri. Sometimes, I just don't feel like spinning. So I don't.

I found in the past that if I did not listen to my body when it wanted some time off, I ended up having a much less than proper workout. I compare it to taking adequate rests between sets - if I don't rest properly, the following sets just aren't as good as they should be. "

" i wish i knew what to say. i don't get burned out i think, i get impatient sometimes. i'm always looking for a short cut, or a angle to get more faster. i'm also bipolar and sometimes when i wake up i have to make myself exercise/work out. i think, if i can't ahve a healthy mind, i can at least have a healthy body, and when i am done with my work out my mind feels healthier and i feel better about myself for doing something i did't feel like doing. lol. " Taking a day off is better than going to the gym half-hearted.

If you do that, you'll just have a bad workout, and you'll feel bad about the negative experience all week, plus you'll have wasted more than 2 hours of your day feeling like you did nothing.

Just take a break. "

" Hey, I know I'm a little late on this one but I just wanted to agree with everyone else... If you are mentally and/or physically exhausted that can be a sign of overtraining and you need to take some time off. Have you considered scaling down your workout routine a bit? I remember reading another post of yours a few months ago, where you were struggling with similar issues of feeling like you were doing too much.... Maybe if you tried only going to the gym alternate days? Or going to the gym on the weekend days and doing yoga on the week days? Or something else... whatever would work for you. I just feel strongly that the purpose of exercise, and especially a strong and healthy yoga practice, is not to do something that wears down your mind and body and feels like a chore. Pushing yourself is good, pushing yourself to the point of complete exhaustion (physical OR mental) is not.

If this is just a feeling that you are having today, disregard some of that, obviously... but if it is a long term issue, please think it over and decide how much of it is helpful to you, and/or truly applicable to your situation. "

" I know that I have to stop punishing myself but it is hard. I am forcing a break this week. I remember when yoga was a great joy for me and when I looked forward to hopping out of bed to do some kickboxing. I need to get back to that place. I'll figure it out but I do think I am mentally burned out so I've just been eating right, walking the dog and allowing myself to do nothing. "

" So glad you are doing better, it sounds like you are doing exactly what you need right now... I've gotten to that point where I'm exercising so much I despise it too, or exercising for the wrong reasons and despising it because of that, so I totally sympathize. It is so good to see that you are taking a break to get yourself out of that mindset cause I think we both know at this point, it is pure torture. "
